Sorry, but no: There are many issues, but Abbott removing Gillard’s carbon price, which was working, didn’t help fix anything. It’s this same lot that’s in power federally which are wasting our (taxpayers’) money pork barrelling while ignoring all those other problems, or even making them worse (the LNP’s ideological attacks on unions has weakened employees bargaining positions, worsening wage stagnation & job insecurity).
It’d be one of the simplest thing in the world to bring back that carbon price, and let the market get back to fixing that problem in whatever the cheapest & most efficient way is out there, as it would to wind back the ridiculously generous capital gains tax concessions & negative gearing which inflate house prices, making housing unaffordable for millions of people; the next day they could look start addressing the more complex problems that also need attention.
Ignoring the fact that pumping CO2 & methane into the sky is causing our planet to heat up doesn’t make it go away, just like ignoring the other problems doesn’t fix them.
Just because we wish things weren’t true isn’t a reason to believe lies denying the proven facts.
Anyway…
Tomorrow Canberra is forecast to reach 36°C, hotter than usual for the first day of summer, and this afternoon the air conditioning at my work failed… I hope they get it fixed tomorrow morning.
Perth had the coldest December minimum on record where it dipped down to a cold 6.6 degrees Celsius. Last night, my father wore a jacket during the night.
However, the temperatures will gradually increase in the next few days. We may see very hot nights and days ahead in the lead up to Christmas. WE may see 3 40+ degree days over Christmas.
Astounding temperature in Perth. I doubt here at 700 m elevation and 35 degrees south will get that low this December, though we usually see the odd single figure morning here and there. Back to the same old ‘hot east, cold west’ pattern that has dogged us since about 2013. Wettest and coolest November for years over there as well. Time to move to Albany.
Fortunately it will cool down somewhat after today- at least in NSW.
Tassie is the only part of Australia where summer is consistently enjoyable, along with Albany and coastal SW Victoria/SE South Australia. Portland in Victoria gets Tasmanian summers without the inconvenience of actually travelling to Tassie, except for the very odd 40C day in a hot northerly.
Perth looks like it will finally suffer some extended heat next week as the east finally enjoys an extended reprieve from the heat; it tends to work like that. There may even be some alpine snow on the mainland on Monday and probably in parts of TAS again as well.
Here in Bungendore it will be high teens to low 20s for a couple of days and well into the single figures overnight. That’s cold considering the ‘new’ December average is around 28C (it was 30C last year, when the fires were raging). Heck, we may even get lower than Perth’s temp the other day after all!
I’m moving to Canberra from North QLD in 3 weeks time and I am hopeful the weather will still be like that by the time we arrive, because the humidity is insufferable up here currently
Yes I couldn’t live up there either for that reason.
I have a cousin in Cairns, he says during the summer months, he can just be sitting in the shade, and be sweating without even lifting a finger.
I remember being like that whilst in Singapore in June 2018, on a river cruise, sitting in the shade. I was glad to get back to our winter, whilst it was a great place to see, it was just too hot (and too wet at the same time).
Can definitely confirm that is normal, just being outside at any time (day or night) usually triggers a sweat, regardless of if you are doing anything or not.
Night time brings no relief, I went outside to put something in the outdoor rubbish bin not long ago and the hot air just hits you right in the face.
This morning, I got out of bed at 6:30am and it was already 28°C and humid, it’s unbearable.
It got down to 4C here last night! Well below what the BOM or any weather model predicted. So we beat Perth already.
Unfortunately the pattern over the last few months has been a cool start but very hot finish to each month. I am fully expecting another terrible heatwave around Christmas/New Year; the same pattern tends to repeat year after year. January will be tough before it hopefully turns cooler and wetter in the latter part of summer.
That said, even January will be easy to take compared to Townsville. Canberra city usually gets two or three intense heatwaves with multiple days in the 38-42C range, though.
at this stage, perth will have a slight chance of thunderstorms next week. I feel that minimum temperatures would be about 8 degrees above average. We could see kind of monsoonal conditions in Perth.
Hot overnight temperatures don’t necessarily imply high humidity though, especially in Perth which experiences a dry summer climate. You can get the odd ex tropical cyclone down as far as Perth and Bunbury- with the tropical weather that implies- but it’s fairly rare.
Thunderstorms can happen occasionally but are fairly isolated. I’d say that’s the most likely outcome here.
You can get humidity in Perth of course, but it usually comes as a result of a (shallow) seabreeze undercutting very hot inland air. This functions like an ineffective evaporative cooler, cooling the air temp but raising humidity. You rarely get rain as a result of this.
Summer thunderstorms are really hard to know where and when they will happen. All they have been touting for next week is possible thunderstorms from late Tuesday. I guess they know after the last debacle in February where the predictions were a hit and miss.
Forecasting is never a 100% game - simply not possible to know every detail about what is always going to happen with the weather - best you can do is have a good strike rate.
I would be interested to know if any channel’s meteorologists do their own forecasting at all or if they just follow the BOM. Wouldn’t surprise me these days if they do the latter.
7 Melbourne was doing the 8 day forecast for a while, I assume that 8th day came from somewhere else. Apart from that it’s 100% BOM, it was more common for them to use other sources when BOM was still limited to 4 day forecasts.
Weatherzone is the only other one I can think of that still offers information independent of BOM online. Don’t count the overseas outlets as they aren’t accurate, even if it’s what many people will rely upon on their Smartphones.
