Climate, Weather and Emergencies

And the Hunter today/tomorrow… Scone is 39 today, 41 tomorrow.

The usual heat magnet in western Sydney, Penrith, expected to hit 42 tomorrow as well.

Another lazy 55mm of rain here yesterday and overnight. The usual suspect creeks (plus a few others) are up and flooding around Brisbane this morning.

Dew points now in the 24-25 degree range - it is sweaty…

Yepppoon had 66mm.

What would you prefer?

A. 40 degree dry heat with 19 degree dew point

or

B. 30 degree humidity with 23 degree dew point

Heat is better than humidity.

I’ve been in Dubai with close to 50 degree heat but no humidity, which was uncomfortable but manageable.

But Singapore with 29 degree heat and high humidity was almost unbearable.

19 dew point is still too high. 40 with a single digit dew point might be more bearable.

Back in September Yeppoon had our first 32 deg day but humidity was 10 percent and winds were westerly . I think the dew point was very very low possibly negative.

Didn’t need the air con on or fans the feels like temp was 23 deg i think the BOM said.

Feels like we’re in the second month of summer … it started here around this time 2 months ago.

If max mins and dp’s are like this now what will it be like in February ?

Yep, too high for me as well, though where you are now a 19C DP would be luxury. 19C isn’t even all that uncommon in Bungendore these days as well as Geelong.

Canberra is no longer immune from spells of high humidity; in the last run of heat about 10 days ago the dewpoints were consistently in the high teens to about 20C here. That muggy spell engulfed the whole SE of the continent though, and was related to the record SSTs off the Kimberley. Tropical moisture was being continuously funneled down from there and later on the Coral Sea.

This hot spell hasn’t been as humid as the last one, though dewpoints are still higher than average at the moment. Much cooler weather is expected over the next couple of days with even some single digit minima creeping in (that’s not unusual for Bungendore; a couple of years ago I even had a frost in December).

40/19 is a horrible combination btw; places like Penrith and Ipswich see that at least once or twice a summer. Anything above the old 100F mark (37.8C) is hot no matter how you slice it, but is definitely more bearable with single figure dews. 30/23 is still bloody awful but I think the 40/19 is worse in terms of apparent temp. 30/23 isn’t uncommon throughout Sydney these days.

I was on a coach tour in late 1997/early 98 that started off in Adelaide, travelled up through the SA outback including stops at Coober Pedy ,then on to NT with stops at Uluṟu,Kings Canyon and Alice Springs. Most days on this trip it was over 40 degrees but with minimal humidity. It wasn’t so bad as having very high humidity but I remember being glad to get back on the coach with the air conditioning going

Yeppoon is going for 37 deg on Christmas Eve… models saying a dew point of around 22 deg in the afternoon :frowning:

Very rare to see a temp that high

Other models have 32-33 deg with dew points 12-16 deg

Look how much higher than average the SST’s are

Probably no wonder that the south easterlies aren’t cooling much here given how hot the Tasman is…

Yep Yeppoon is going for 36 deg on Christmas Eve with a dew point of 18 deg with ESE winds which usually are cooler.

The stinker in QLD just before Christmas is due to an unusually strong cold front down south, brought on by a period of negative SAM. This is similar to what happened in the latter part of 2019, only that lasted for months and was the catalyst for the Black Summer fires.

One output has us at 4C on Christmas Eve morning, and some snow flurries are possible on the Alps on Monday, mainly in VIC. I doubt it will settle much or hang around long enough for a white Christmas, though. A white Christmas was achieved in 2006 up at Hotham.

Naturally, the next five+ days in Brisbane are warm and mostly sunny. If you want rain, schedule a cricket match. I bet Sydney will turn wet early Jan as well…

I wonder if Jan- March will be wet in Qld . Will the pattern continue…

I recall Christmas 2006 - that was a cold, cold day in Victoria, and snow was down to some of the lower peaks throughout the state from memory.

Even in Sydney not far from the coast, the temperature got down to 10C on Boxing Day morning. I think Christmas Day itself was about 25C with a westerly, that’s very low by Sydney standards for December (it would translate to about 18C here). Monday’s change is at least a few degrees warmer than that with around 20C predicted for here at this stage, though I wouldn’t be surprised if that warms a few degrees.

Getting a day as cool as 25 with a westerly even in Bungendore is a stretch nowadays in summer. Minimums can still get pretty cold though with a SW’ly, it’s just that there’s too much land that heats up in between here and Victoria, and we also get a warming (Foehn) effect from the Brindabellas.

Last year wasn’t much better. We had our fireplace on. Felt like a European Christmas.
