Tonight’s premiere of Sergio Perera’s Destination Noosa was rated PG for mature themes. I hope these mature themes do not refer to the way Sergio and his friend catching two tunas at the sea then putting them in ice, or that Sergio used beer to create a sauce for his slow fried flathead dish. I felt that SBS was too sensitive on methods used by chefs to create delicious food.
Yeah I think currently they’re on an application basis whereby they also pay a fee and old titles can only be re-classified (re-submitted) by applicants as well. Essentially the government at present can’t dictate any content changes upon studios/streamers.
Despite awarded classifications being legislation/legal and exhibitors, digital/streamers and retailers must adhere to the guidelines including the age restricted MA, R and X ratings.
Not like in the US where titles can go “unrated” (and are usually not picked up by exhibitors) if they please, as well as physical media releases and I don’t believe any federal government legalities either.
Though in terms of overall censorship, I think the USA and UK are more careful, especially when it comes to editing and current ‘PC’ era say for old content. Especially TV broadcasts, we know how strict FTA still is even with a single ‘F-word’ or sexual dialogue and the like, even in what we’d consider a later timeslot or higher ‘M’ rating here.
US-style clickbait on that one
Tonight’s FTA premiere of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning is rated PG. It will be interesting to see how much of the movie (especially the pivotal fight scenes) will be edited to fit with the classification.
Don’t know why they wouldn’t just wait until 7:30pm, part of the reason Seven and Nine don’t start their Saturday movies at 7pm anymore.
10 would’ve probably had to modify quite a bit, given the genre and knowing this franchise. Think all the combat scenes, bullet impacts and any blood detail. Unless they don’t do it properly, only a couple of edits and hope nobody including the regulators notice.
GOOD, Classification
That looks very similar to how it’s done on other Foxtel channels.
A little strange tonight with the Jim Jeffries special on Seven. They’ve given it an MA rating and his non-stop F-bombs are clearly going to air at 8:30pm on the main channel, yet one of his words was still ‘bleeped’? At the very start. Perhaps the C-word (which is permissible at MA)?
Notably the consumer advice said “Frequent Coarse Language” (as well as Sexual References and Crude Humor). However I believe when the C-word is used, networks instead opt for the stronger “Very Coarse Language” or if both Fs and Cs are present “Frequent Very Coarse Language” lines.
Wonder if Seven programmers or censors thought they might cop complaints or offend their core audience if such language was broadcast tonight?
But if so, I mean seriously, what was the point, given the show itself and the comedian in question knowing his stand-up routine. It should also be noted he mentioned “Channel 7” multiple times at the program’s outset, as well as alluding to his top-rating 1%, so almost certainly a vehicle for him and Seven tonight. Unless the bleep(s) are part of his jokes or something.
Truth be told, as a viewer, I would consider ‘very’ and ‘frequent’ to be one and the same thing! Hate how they’ve over complicated what was a simpler and logical set up 15 years ago.
Actually, that’s the old lingo, from the 2010 (?) Code and first started to be introduced from the mid-90s, after the old “PGR”, “AO”, etc were ditched. After the OFLC’s current system was implemented adding the MA rating in early 1993 (revised with the colour coding and some phrasing in mid-2005).
It’s just some broadcasters since the revised late-2015 Code have instead continued with some old usage.
An MA symbol appeared at the start of last Wednesday’s episode of RFDS. However, after the first ad break, it was back to M.
Presentation/playout error for sure
And the episode is listed as “M” on 7Plus.

Have Seven recently updated their classification warning and “CC” bug presentation? That MA cap shows capital letters (previously used from 2016 until the mid-2020 relaunch where they went to lower case) and the Closed Captions usually come on half a minute later.
The classification and CC bugs were usually only together if there is no consumer advice and smaller in size. And for some reason 7flix’s always look slightly different, like Seven’s pre-2020 style, the channel was played out separately to the others.
They wouldn’t be able to screen MA at 7.30pm would they?
Could they have done an edit to screen it in the timeslot?
AFAIK R18+ is not allowed on FTA and applies to their bvod services. However, this film is actually rated MA, so looks like an upload error by someone in 10’s digital department.
Oddly, when you play the movie, it’s actually got an M warning, it has been modified (it has aired on broadcast in 8:30pm timeslots prior to 2020 and 7:30pm on Nickelodeon the other day).
