Note:

The paper says that Nine relayed its golf broadcast from ABC in the US, listing commentators Jim McKay, Jack Whitaker and Bob Rosburg. Isn’t that strange?

why is it strange?

Ten Eyewitness News at 2pm. Who would be watching it at that time of the day?

people not into Days Of Our Lives

It’s so strange that Nine didn’t have its own commentators for the broadcast, and preferred to air the entire telecast from ABC instead. Maybe any of the members of the sports team didn’t want to be up so early in the morning!

I guess it’s cheaper. Also it’s 5.30am and probably not a huge audience (and it’s only golf  )

Nothing strange as all about that, it most likely would’ve been hosted by a member of the WWOS team, perhaps Ian Chappell who often hosted golf telecasts in the 80s and 90s, either on location or in the studio.

Stay at home Mums, old Grandmas.

Outside of some marquee sporting events, eg. the Olympics, I don’t think any Australia network would’ve invested in sending over a commentary team.

Same with their US Open tennis coverage until the late 90s when they took the CBS coverage save for the final.

I don’t think that was the norm for tennis. Nine would send their own commentary for US Open and Wimbledon.

You could easily see why Ten was no 1 in news then. Their investment was massive in news.

Definitely for Wimbledon but often the Australian voices wouldn’t be heard if at all in the 90s until the latter stages of the tournament other than for intros, outros and maybe in a rain delay.

I think that Nine took its golf coverage of the Masters from CBS. Is that correct?

Friends was on its second year of its amazing run on Nine, pulling around two million viewers every Monday. Every comedy which immediately followed Friends also became a de facto ratings hit.

I think the Stawell Gift has been passed around all networks except SBS over the years.

For many years though its coverage was a co-production between HSV7 and BTV6 in Ballarat
