Bert Newton returns to TV to host the TV Week Logie Awards, broadcast for the first time on the Seven Network.

The following Monday, Seven launches The Bert Newton Show and The Power The Passion up against Nine’s Midday

The Power, the Passion was devised as an attempt to lure viewers away from The Young and the Restless. Unfortunately the plan failed and TPTP was axed after 168 episodes.

I still believe that 2002-2006 TV deal curbed the popularity growth of AFL in NSW and QLD. Prime Television in both states were doing fine by showing Friday night AFL on the main channel, at the same time as Prime Victoria. Under the new deal, fans in those states lost the privilege. Nine’s priority in NSW and QLD was (and still is) the NRL and there was no way it would let its then affiliate WIN to show AFL in primetime. Things didn’t improve under the 2007-2011 broadcast deal as fans had to subscribe to Foxtel in order to watch Friday night matches live on Main Event, then pop up channel Fox Sports Plus.

Robert Fidgeon’s review of Home & Away which mainly focused on the program’s high ratings of the time (2005 probably would’ve been around the time H&A peaked in popularity/ratings?) is certainly quite a contrast to how things are now!

Aside from that, not an overly amazing Thursday night of TV. 20 to 1 (with what would’ve been one of the last new appearances on Australian TV for the always brilliant Charles “Bud” Tingwell) might’ve been passable viewing but apart from that, probably would’ve a good one to hire a DVD or head off to the cinema on!

I’m not sure how widely supported the AFL was in Regional NSW back in 2002-06, but I doubt the sport had too much of a following in Regional Queensland even prior to that broadcast deal with Seven Queensland likely following Seven Brisbane’s scheduling of AFL. The only area of Regional QLD which would’ve had access to Prime Television at that time would’ve been the Gold Coast.

From what I recall, Seven continued to treat the AFL with contempt from a Sydney (and probably also Brisbane) perspective even after 2007 with delayed late night broadcasts for years until the start of multichannel coverage on 7mate.

In 2005, Dr Phil used to be shown on Nine during midday but has moved to 10 in 2007 (IIRC). I also remembered that TEN aired The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2006 during midday but then this show moved to the Nine Network.
During that year, The Price is Right struggled against its rival game show, Deal or No Deal, in its lead in to 6PM News. The launch of Deal or No Deal saw Seven News Melbourne increase their numbers. At the end of that year, The Price is Right ended on Nine, where Larry moved to Channel Seven to host Wheel of Fortune, which was put on hiatus.

I’ve never been a H&A fan but ratings did spike when they had the Summer Bay stalker storyline that dragged out for some time. That may have been around 2005.

Yes, the stalker storyline played out in the first half of 2005. The show was quite decent back then. One of the mistakes they made IMHO was resurrecting the stalker and basically having the same storyline again in 2006!

Notes:
*As it was mentioned on a previous post discussing limited transmission hours, there wasn’t early morning television here in Buenos Aires for decades. Only one station (usually ATC) stayed on air 24 hours in the early 1990s with movies and documentaries, but reduced its broadcast time in 1997 to a 11am/noon start time, being now on par it with the private channels. At the same time, América 2 launched its successful 7am news program that lasted 2 years, reducing again its transmission hours in 1999, moving the sign-on time to noon. In May 2000, a show called Desayuno (Breakfast, in English) was launched on Canal 7, the former ATC, hosted by veteran journalist Victor Hugo Morales. The program became an instant hit: it aired from 7am to 10am (while the other stations were dark) but the problem was that during its first 3 seasons on air, it didn’t air all-year round, staying on air between May to December or July to December. In 2003, the program got competition, as Canal 9, who had new owners, premiered the morning edition of Telenueve, that took a big portion of the audience, as viewers now had 2 options to choose from. In 2005, Canal 13 didn’t want to stay behind them (as @theduytv mentioned) and created Arriba Argentinos, a new morning news show that it’s the most watched program on its timeslot almost since its inception, dethroning both Telenueve and Desayuno: the latter was canceled in 2006 due to political reasons.

Interesting that Argentina didn’t really have morning television until the 2000s. Surely these national networks had a large enough audience to justify it…

The stations didn’t have morning programming because its bosses considered it wasn’t very profitable.

Australian TV probably would’ve had a similar philosophy for a while? Because for several years, Today was the only news-based program at breakfast while the other three major networks ran children’s programming.
