I’ve never been able to see a country Victoria guide in any of the 1980s copies of The Age that are online. Was this country edition that you got it from?
Don’t know which edition to be honest, it must have been. Most of the ones I’ve seen online only seem to have the Melbourne channels, I ended up doing a text search using callsigns or a phrase like “Country TV” to find one, and that was one that can came up.
Newspapers.com (a subscription site, although it offers a free 7-day trial) has both Sydney Morning Herald and The Age archives. I’ve found the easiest way to find regional listings is just to punch in a station’s calls (and restrict the area to Australia) and let the search do the rest! Google News Archive also has some from both papers but their controls are shot, and Google no longer maintains it technically…

I get mine via the NSW State Library E-Resources, which is free if you are a library member, which is also free. Also has a vast archive of SMH and The Age papers.
I have free access to the NSW state library archives for the SMH and The Age.
It’s a great resource, isn’t it.. I’m looking up stuff on it almost every day.
Proquest has an Australian collection, pretty much just The Age and SMH up until 2000.
It’s not a paid service but you need to have a membership to a participating library (e.g. State Library of Victoria) to access it.
That’s the one that the NSW State Library archives use as well.
It was interesting to see Sale Of The Century not in the 7pm timeslot on NSW regionals back in the days of 1980. Also wasn’t screening on CTC7 at all
I think Canberra picked it up from early 1981 after it withdrew from relaying Willesee At Seven.
It was likely rare back then to list out pay-TV channels as part of the newspaper EPG.
And weird channel allocation went way back then, like for example the cricket could have led to A-League.
No one lists it this way nowadays. You have to get hold of the original guide and try to locate it.
That was the first year it was on air.. so I guess it shouldn’t be surprising that not every regional station was screening it then as not everyone would have thought it would be the success that it was.
CTC-7 was screening it by 1981 however (at 7pm). Though by then in regional VIC and surrounds, only BTV-6, GMV-6 and SES-8 were screening Sale (BCV-8, GLV-8 and AMV-4 weren’t).
According to the above tv guides RVN-2/AMV-4 were screening Sale Of The Century in November 1980
Oh ok, didn’t see that.. The one I was looking at in ‘The Age’ (for 13 November 81 - only a couple of weeks later didn’t have it).
The TV guide is was referring to was from Monday 3 November 1980, not 1981. I daesay it might have went off early fir Christmas or might have been a typographical error.
I have seen NRTV Gold Coast TV guides without Sale Of The Century listed in 1989 and 1991, but NRTV Lismore screened Sale Of The Century until July 1991 where it cut National Nine News, Sale Of The Century and Happy Days from the schedule and replaced by Blind Date and Ten Eyewitness News hour (which displaced Neighbours for around 3 months before NRTV News started presenting a composite bulletin and return Happy Days for a further 2 months.
I was actually a bit confused at the time by NRTV opting of Happy Days and Sale Of The Century instead Lets Make A Deal and Blind Date - especially since the latter aired on NRTV Gold Coast - I was told yhe programming difference was because NRTV was seen as a direct competitor of Nine and similarly seen as a competitor by 10 even though NRTV was an affiliate partner. This was supposed to be the logic for A Country Practice and most Channel 7 programs being dropped at end of August 1991, except Beyond 2000 and a handful of children’s programs. By December 1 1991, with exception of the World Series Cup Cricket, all programming came from Channel 10
Yes, I think I got my wires crossed re 80 vs 81 there.
And yes, no ‘Sale’ on the Mid North Coast in the latter half of 1991 on either Prime or NRTV, I guess not surprisingly with stations starting to align themselves more closely with their feeder networks just months out from aggregation.
This from the ‘Port Macquarie News’ 2-3 October 1991
The rugby there was ENG vs NZ, not sure why that wasn’t shown.
The beginning of the end for ABC’s RWC coverage.
What do you mean?
Was on ABC on 3rd Oct at 11pm as above.
The match wasn’t namechecked “ENG vs NZ” in the EPG is what I meant.
