WIN isn’t just Wollongong, it’s South Coast too, and you can’t get Sydney TV channels down there.
south of Kiama
Then why is Channel 8 on the South Coast just taking 9HD Wollongong?
Several members have confirmed the LCN for Channel 8 on the South Coast now says 9HD Wollongong (paging @Bas_Tech and @Aaron_Evans_2005) which means the advertising is also now coming from 9HD Wollongong. And plenty of it is Wollongong-centric, with only a few South Coast ads. Meanwhile Seven is kinder to the Shoalhaven area, Nowra, Bomaderry and Ulladulla, etc with their advertising.
In the past 9HD was a local South Coast feed with opt-out advertising. Only Seven and 10 still have local South Coast feeds with opt-out advertising for the South Coast.
With this year’s AFL Grand Final fast approaching and the nostalgia from the social upload seen today (linked in the Ten AFL thread), a look back at Ten’s coverage in 2009 vs 2011 during the ‘ONE HD’ years. Quite a stark difference, the network spat the dummy in the latter year!
2009:
ONE HD’s post coverage went until nearly 9pm, it was from their MCG special studio set-up inside and Anthony Hudson hosted with a panel. Quartermain handed over to George Donikian at 6pm in Melbourne.
The Age (Saturday) bizarrely had the day’s top picks as Seven’s old movie re-runs:
2011 (Quartermain and Hudson called this game):
Note no coverage at all on ONE, except a replay of the game (it’d be Ten’s last ever airing of AFL on the network).
Also coinciding with the 2011 GF were:
Ten Late News and Sports Tonight axed:
Deborah Knight axed.
Donikian (axed) retired and his final bulletin was foolishly at a random 8:30pm following a family movie, which I believe actually started at 6:
A new national weekend news would commence, with Natarsha Belling, Matt Doran, Rob Canning and Magdalena Roze (the below promo has the original Ten v/o for Fremantle shows TBL s1-7, MasterChef s1-4 and ONE HD - since at Seven):
Also Video Hits had also been axed some months earlier and this year had already seen Eleven launch and Simpsons and Neighbours move to there.
Another Grand Final one from me… since come approx 5.10 Saturday (?) and 9.15pm next Sunday night, someone’s going to be partying like it’s 1999… so the SYD/MEL Guides below for the Grand Final weekend of 25-26 September 1999 are as below!
Saturday AFL - Channel 7 Sydney joined 7 Melbourne’s AFL coverage from 11am (Melbourne’s Footy Marathon started at midnight!), but Prime Sth NSW joined from 9am.
Sunday NRL - Sydney and Melbourne got the same coverage on Nine both from 11am to 6am (it was still a daytime Grand Final then), probably helped by the fact that the Storm was playing in the big one in just their 2nd year.
Sydney
Melbourne
The Dragons were also playing in their first Grand Final as a merged entity; the 1999 season was their first season as such, after St George and Illawarra merged at the end of the previous season.
Despite me being two months old back then, after seeing it on the internet when I got older (been a Dragons Supporter since 2006 or something) I still know it as one of the most painful days in Dragons History.
Now I feel old! ![]()
Today’s TV: Saturday 25 September 2010 Perth, WA

Coverage of the 2010 AFL Grand Final between Collingwood and St Kilda which ended in a draw on Seven. Also the launch of 7mate with a simulcast of the Grand Final before the full launch after the drawn game. Surprised Perth didn’t get the North Melbourne Grand Final Breakfast live and instead got a shortened 1hr edition of Weekend Sunrise instead.
Maybe these Perth listings need to be typed out or OCR’d or something, especially these ones with multichannels bunched in. How the hell can you even see some of the text?
You were old back then. ![]()

ONE’s marathon grand final coverage lasting 12 hours until 8:45pm AEST simulcast on the main channel on TEN until 6pm AEST. It was the most extensive grand final coverage undertaken by any television network in Australia
I’d argue that the HSV-7 one from 1981 that I posted 4 days ago was more comprehensive… including the overnight marathon, replays, round ups, that went for about 24 hours.
I know the overnight VFL/AFL Footy Marathons prior to the big day were quite the thing on HSV-7 back in the 80s and 90s..
Somewhat oddly I think Nine only ever tried that once with it’s rugby league coverage .. in 1993 … Guide below.. they went the extra hour starting from 11pm.
A shame they interrupted it with Business Sunday/Sunday in the morning though!
I’m going to help out with that. (With a side of unnecessary info like it was printed.)

AFL Grand Final between traditional rivals Geelong and Hawthorn back on 7 for the first time in 7 years after the last 6 years all on TEN. 7 would’ve show even-numbered year Grand Finals and TEN would’ve shown odd-numbered year Grand Finals
Interesting Seven showed the Disney movie Cars after 2008 and the drawn game in 2010 during the 2007-11 broadcast rights era
