Today Tonight… Tomorrow?
I thought NBN had its own local late news edition at this time?
They did usually, but that was just 5 minutes due to the tennis, so they probably didn’t bother to do one just for 5 minutes.

Seven’s Athens Olympic coverage runs all-day with SBS airing some events. The same practice happened 4 years later in Beijing with Seven and SBS sharing Olympic Coverage
Newcastle Herald - Sunday 11 August 1991.
A couple of interesting points about this one, given we were still just under 4 months out from aggregation here in Northern NSW.
Prime (8) had Live AFL (which for this date was Sydney Swans vs Nth Melbourne from the SCG.. but was not shown on 7 Sydney at all this day … I think this was a time when 7 only showed Swans highlights the following Saturday at 1pm prior to the 2pm live game.
Prime also had a different Sunday night movie to 7 on this date (normally they ran the same programming otherwise except for sport). The following Sunday they showed the same Sunday night movie however.
It’s interesting that in most markets, the ABC were given the first channel and the commercials the others. But in Newcastle, NBN was Channel 3 and ABC was Channel 5A. And SBS was out there on Channel 45.
There were a few others where the commercial station was given the lower VHF frequency
Wollongong WIN-4 (ABC 5A)
Mackay MVQ-6 (ABC-8)
Rockhampton RTQ-7 (ABC-9)
Bunbury SSW-3 (ABC-5)
But yes, most of the time, the ABC got the lower frequency. Country AM radio was similar.
ABC was originally on Channel 4 in Mackay and 3 in Rockhampton, but later were moved up the dial with the clearance of TV services from VHF Band II.
I think it was modelled on the British system which did similar where BBC channels were at the lower end of the dial and commercial channels up the higher end.

AFL match between Fremantle and St Kilda delayed on Nine and live on WIN
Is it just me, but at a resolution of 600×885, this image is virtually illegible
It’s not just you; some programmes are also blurred for me
I’ve never been able to read any of the perth clippings. All way too blurred.
if you are so inclined, you could download the image and zoom in on the downloaded version.
I’m interested in historic TV guides, but not that interested ![]()

Odd to see Whose Line on at a watchable time. When I got into it, they were burning it out at 25 to 4 in the morning after Letterman.
I noticed no Sale Of The New Century on WIN. At what time did WIN stop airing Sale and did it return before it was “rested”?
This is not to be confused with The Morning Show hosted in the same timeslot today. How did The Morning Shift rated back in the day?
Thought I’d try my hand at a ‘On This Day’ style Classic TV Guide.
From the Sydney Morning Herald, Sat 29 August 1987.
An interesting time when the VFL was on SBS in Sydney! (I think this was when the ABC had the VIC rights), but CTC-7 Canberra also carried it. NBN-3 and WIN-4 didn’t take the VFL back then. The ABC still had the rugby league Saturday rights and it was live across NSW then too (wasn’t the case in the early 80s).
Now that the footy finals are almost here, it’s a time for a ‘footy finals’ flavoured Classic TV Guide!
The weekend is 5-6 September 1992, a time when Nine was covering the rugby league finals for the first time and also a time when the league and AFL finals all ran on the same weekends (this being Week 1 for both and the Grand Finals in the last weekend of September).
Sydney (and NSW regionals) is below (from the Sydney Morning Herald). The ABC was still showing rugby league highlights. After Nine only screened Sunday night 1 hour highlights at 6.30 all season up to now (a contentious point among viewers - (Sports Broadcasting History - #1431 by Radiohead), Nine finally got it’s act together and screened full match replays, meaning the Sunday night news got bumped to 5pm.
And this is how Melbourne viewers saw the same weekend, with Nine showing the league finals live there instead of late nights.
A few points:
- Why NBN and WIN and Nine had different movies on the weekend is weird. Especially pre-empting a movie like Leathal Weapon 2.
- No mention of NRTV? You’d think they could add it in the Capital column.
- Why NBN opted out of, of all things, a Knights game at midnight, is beyond me. NBN is the Knights, the Knights are NBN and so on and so forth.
- Why Capital and Prime didn’t go 24/7 at this stage is still beyond me.
