TV Guide Newcastle Herald - Tuesday 29th May 1984
Which station is ch8 in the Newcastle Herald listings?
ECN8 Taree. Clear in many parts of the Hunter.
Channel 8 would be ECN-8 which was part of 9-8 television at the time and right before the Great Eastland Television arrangement ended,
DDQ10-SDQ4,NRN11-RTN8 and NEN9-ECN8 at the time aired the comedies Love Thy Neighbour and Man About The House at 7:30pm Tuesdays. Also at this time, A Country Practice screened at 7:30pm Thursday and Friday nights before moving to 7:30pm Mondays and Tuesdays by the end of the decade. NEN9-ECN8 did move ACP to Tuesdays and Wednesdays in 1987 before it moving it to Monday and Tuesday to be in align with Seven and the other Prime Television channels in NSW
Wonder why you’d have the State of Origin delayed on NBN/ECN - doesn’t seem like particularly compelling alternate programming…
Was that schedule on ABC normal - cutting short to simulcast some 0-28 programming into regional areas? Did that last right through to the regional rollout of SBS or was it just an occasional thing - I don’t think I’ve noticed it on a schedule before.
Yeah that puzzled me too. Considering that NBN always showed cricket live
ABC carried late night test programming for SBS in areas where SBS was to launch in 1985. AFAIK the test programming was only for a week or a couple of weeks at a time.
I didn’t realise Neighbours was shown at 4.30pm on SCA and then again on Ten Tasmania at 6.30pm.
I think they still had accommodate for areas/households that didn’t yet have access to TDT. So a few Ten shows may have still remained on Southern Cross.

On that day, Channel 7 screened the final AFL match, the 2001 AFL Grand Final between Essendon and Brisbane Lions. Brisbane Lions won its first premiership after beating Essendon. Bruce McAvaney and Sandy Roberts called the match Anthony Hudson used to work at Channel 7 until the end of 2001 before moving to Channel 10. After Seven screened the final AFL match, Bruce McAvaney made an emotional speech at the end of Seven’s broadcast. As a result, Nine, Ten and Foxtel took over as the official AFL broadcaster from late 2001 onwards. I wonder if Nine had screened some AFL ads after the end of the 2001 AFL season?
Was this the AFL contract where Nine stuffed up letting TEN have the GF each year and Packer was spewing about it?
Nine should’ve aired grand finals in even-numbered years (2002, 2004, 2006) with Ten airing in odd-numbered years (2003, 2005)
I thought that there might have been a clause in NRL contract that NRL takes priority over AFL and the AFL would not have wanted to play second fiddle to NRL, especially given the drive to make it number one Winter code right across Australia including in NRL states

Day 14 of the 2000 Summer Olympics went underway in Sydney, Australia. Very heavy Olympics schedule on Seven with Today at the Games at 10am and Tonight at the Games at 8pm.
I also noticed that Nine aired a truncated Who Wants to be a Millionaire with Eddie McGuire. As well, I also noticed that Cheez Marathon aired at 9am on 10. I wonder whether GMA with Bert Newton was put on hiatus?

Day 16 of the 2000 Summer Olympics went underway in Sydney. At 5pm, they aired the Closing Ceremony Live. More than 6 million Australians tuned in to the Closing Ceremony which shattered ratings records. I looked through the Closing Ceremony via TikTok and noticed that they had Bananas in Pyjamas characters at the event. I noticed that at 10:40pm, Seven wrote down as “Details Not Available at Time of Printing”. I wonder whether there might be any unforeseen alterations to the Olympics Schedule.

Wendi spun up the Driclad Above-Ground pool and struggles to solve the Star & Title puzzle “JOHN TRAVOLTA SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER”. Within the 10 seconds she says FRANK SINATRA. How weird is that I have no sense of Frank Sinatra starring in “Saturday Night Fever”!
