I would say it was axed due the introduction of the 4.30 News being more successful and popular at the time. The network most likely opted to add its resources to afternoons rather than late night.
Samantha Armytage read the late night national update at 10.30pm (along with a 30 second update at 9.30pm).
Seven also introduced (around 2007) a late night Friday bulletin for Sydney and Brisbane on Friday Nights to help align both market schedules with the Southern AFL states.
Really? I thought by 2007 the bloom was coming off of the rose and the numbers were on the decline, especially after the “Turkey Slap” the previous year.
Not to also mention the decision to replace Gretel Killeen with Kyle and Jackie O as hosts for the 2008 season, which ended up being its final season on Network Ten.
CHannel Nine televised an Anzac Day AFL match between Collingwood and Essendon at the MCG. On that day, the AFL returned to the MCG for the 2006 AFL Season. The MCG was unavailable in the first four rounds of the AFL season, due to the restoration works after the Melbourne 2006 Games - during that time, the stadium was used as the main athletics stadium as well as the ceremonies.
I noticed that WIN WA was able to show four hours of live AFL match, while Nine Perth cut off the coverage at 3:30 pm. I wonder if this got to do with the lead in to Bert’s Family Feud as well as its 6pm News?
In this case, it looks like it was more a case of program shuffling … with Sale moved from 7pm on Nine to 5pm on NBN, and consequently Brady being moved from 5pm on Nine to 4.30pm on NBN.
But yeah, NBN loved their Sullivans repeats… for years in the 90s, it was on instead of Nine’s morning news (which they never liked airing).
Southern Cross loved their infomercials too, at one time in the 2000s they had infomercials pre-empting a half-hour Ten programme in the mid-afternoon, and when 10 Peach (then Eleven) started they did the same. In 1995 they pre-empted Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton with two hours of TVSN.
Quite a big sports schedule on WIN with the ANZAC Day AFL match between Essendon and Collingwood (simulcast with Channel TEN), as well as the ICC Cricket World Cup Semi-Final match between Australia and South Africa from the West Indies.
I always took that as 10 doing that as a way to prop up the declining numbers. I feel like there were a few changes that year to keep the ratings from going down.
Surprised they did that, Those morning shows have always been plastered with infomercial segments.
Why air something that another broadcaster gets free additional reach out of and you don’t get a share of that revenue bump?
For many years, Southern Cross pre-empted Judge Judy with Informercials. Although at one stage, they ran Judy late nights after Letterman, but it did not last too long.
Infomercials were just about the only source of breakaway programming towards the end of the analogue era. I used to sometimes watch ‘Danoz Direct’ on Wollongong TV just because it was different to the local offering
I think it’s still like that too, maybe not quite as much, but late nights / early mornings with 7 regional running Brand Developers from around 1am when 7 metros still run normal programming like Million Dollar Minute repeats and NBC Today that regionals don’t see.
