QTQ9 appears to be in that phase between old and new logos, or TV Week just hasn’t got around to updating its ad inventory

The tsunami relief match, watched it at the ground where there was power issues for about the first 30 overs or so (the scoreboard at the Northern “Hole” where the old Olympic Stand stood wasnt operating for a while). Only test nations not represented in the XII’s that day were the African teams (Zimbabwe had their off field issues, South Africa were playing England in a series which only meant Darren Gough who was only playing ODI’s at that stage was available from England. Bangaldesh’s representative Alok Kapali was made 12th man for the Asian team). Not sure if anyone else joined the regulars plus Waqar Younis in the commentary box (Pakistan were the test visitors that summer), but there was a couch type arrangement on the boundary in front of the Southern Stand where interviews were being conducted during the match, presumably with fundraising efforts in the forefront.

I think by 1988, YTT was really struggling against Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

Even though the Victorian regional stations generally carried Seven News from Melbourne, I wouldn’t be surprised if on this occasion, given the 6.30 end to the cricket, they kept open the relay from Nine and just relayed Nine News after the cricket. It did happen from time to time.

From memory, Level 23 didn’t last long

Channel 10 tried to revitalise the network by increasing its news input during the evening with the addition of Current Affairs and another localised news bulletin at 6:30pm.

Test Cricket on the regional stations, didn’t the ABC broadcast test cricket in regional areas during the 1980’s?

“6PM with George Negus”
It’s a shame this was such a failure because I always liked his 6pm program back when he was on the ABC.

OneHD had both the AFC and NFC championship games back then. This was the season I started following the NFL.

The fact that Ten thought they could import a highbrow, hard news style current affairs format from the ABC and that it would rate better at a lesser cost than reruns of The Simpsons is so outrageous in hindsight.

That’s what I thought too, but this might have been an interim stage between the full on WSC deal where Nine had everything, and the regional deal later settled on with ABC. I admit I am not fluent enough in the cricket coverage arrangements during that period.

That really goes to show you how popular the 7PM project was at the time, they probably thought it was a viable ratings option.

IIRC the 6.00 show Negus had at the ABC was a fairly lightweight/magazine/chat show. It wasn’t hard current affairs but clearly when he went to Ten he and his team were given the remit to go absolutely hardcore with a Foreign Correspondent/Dateline vibe that was at odds with anything Ten was known for. It was too extreme and too fast. I don’t think there was anything particularly wrong with doing an alternative current affairs format to battle ACA/TT, but that wasn’t it.

This was in the midst of 10 having the NFL rights as well as the NBA. NFL rights moved to 7 for the 2014 season.

Romper Room on 9? Wasn’t it a 7 show?

Today on 7…

QTQ9 in Brisbane made its own version for several years. Likewise SAS10 in Adelaide, whose version went for about a decade. Eventually the Sydney-based show from ATN7 went national on Seven and I guess wiped out those other cities’ versions.

Although while all that was going on, NBN was making its own as well.
