Today’s TV: 30.9.1964, Melbourne & Gippsland
Source: TV Times
My first ever post, have been lurking in the shadows for years.
I can confirm the Early News Report on STW9 was the Nine Network Today show. From my recollection video of the Perth skyline from Mounts Bay Road with the graphic Early Morning News Report was inserted over any vision displaying the Today show graphics - I believe the audio was not altered. I don’t recall there were any specific local inserts aside from a short period sometime in the late 1980s when there was a whip around of all the states’ newsrooms that were recorded the evening before.
I suspect STW9 may not have the rights to the name Today in Perth. I believe TVW7 had a late morning programme using the name Today sometime earlier in the 1980s, although I can’t recall if it was still being shown at the time of the Early News Report / Today being broadcast. I remember at the time wondering why the hosts were identifying the broadcast as the Today Show given the graphics and the newspaper guide identified the program as the Early News Report. It was a confusing time for me lol.
I do have a video tape of portions of the Early News Report from around that time which I’ll try to find and take some pics to upload.
As to GMA I can confirm that the show appeared on TVW7 at the time of the America’s Cup and it was played out on delay. I don’t think it continued after the end of the America’s Cup although it certainly returned when NEW10 started in early 1988.
As an aside that was not the first time GMA had been broadcast in Perth. I remember getting up early on the last day of the 1984 Olympics, which was being broadcast through STW9, and watching a special edition of GMA broadcasting live. The 1984 Olympics had been a exciting for me as it gave me access to 2 weeks of Network 10 programming, albeit via the so called Australian Olympic Network. That week was the most access I had had to the Network aside from seeing end credits on 0/10 Network / Network 10 shows such as Prisoner and Chopper Squad. Consequently I had made the effort to get up and watch news programming that was rather foreign to me. That broadcast was also of interest given the presence of the former TVW7 personality Ann Sanders presenting the news portion of GMA which I think highlighted breaking news of a helicopter crash. As I say for a person that had been restricted to TVW7, STW9 and ABW2 news programming that GMA broadcast was an exciting morning albeit cut short by having to go to school.
I hope you will forgive my lengthy musings.
Welcome aboard, and thank you for sharing your local knowledge / memories
Thanks mate. I can even give another example of my long-standing interest in tv presentation issues when I didn’t really know it was an interest held by others. For 3 years in the late 1980s I worked for a company that made tv commercials and in particular animated ones. Often I would go out to TVW7 studios and have our film transferred to video using their telecine. For some reason I always managed to be out there at 3pm during the summer or 4pm in winter. Why those times? They coincided with the broadcast of ATN7 and HSV7’s news is which I would be able to watch in the background as they were being recorded by the TVW7 operators. Ah good times as I tried to find ways to satiate my presentation desires which is now met with this site and YouTube.
Further to my recollections above if anyone is interested in WA commercial tv there is an academic paper which details that history between 1965 and the mid 1980s. It particularly details the difficulties faced by STW9 in chipping away at TVW7’s dominance in the Perth market and the joint purchasing entity they set up to access programming in the days before they became network affiliates. I trust I’m allowed to post the following link - film. There is also a thesis online that provides further information about WA television which I can post a link for if that is acceptable .
I think I know what you’re referring to, happy for you to share a link here
Thanks again mate and I should say it was your website and in particular your various publishing of old TV guides that prompted my memory of watching GMA in 1984. Further to anyone’s interest in WA tv I also reccommend a read of Dr Peter Harries thesis. Dr Harries was a host on STW9 in the 1960s and early 1970s. Whilst I don’t recall his appearances, given i was an infant in the early 70s, I did meet him once for an interview about heart surgery. Anyways here’s the link to Dr Harries’ well researched paper - http://watvhistory.com/category/heritage/dr-peter-harries/

Wondering Why Channel 7 having the rights to The Young and the Restless and Days of Our lives in Perth whereas Channel 9 had the rights in other cities?
I understand that Seven and Nine were independent stations at the time (Ten didn’t arrive until 1988) and used to do a coin toss on the majority of programming that came their way on who would air what.
