Sounds like an early version of Deal Or No Deal with letterboxes instead of briefcases!
Imagine if it would work today?
That was unfortunate. Glad it did not deter you from building up your collection. Many of us appreciate the diverse range of listings you post here.
I heard that some old TV Weeks were being sold on eBay without the program guides. It’s just not TV Week without the guides. I’ve always asked the seller before bidding.
ATN’s 6pm news only ran for 15 minutes?
Most likely on weekends yes. Looking through the old guides, HSV often only went for 15 minutes on weekends too.
The world moved at a slightly slower pace back in 1972, it seems…
… in the early 70s, ABC 7pm Sunday night news ran for just 6 minutes, followed by Weekend Magazine, followed by the weather …
I think some stations around Australia at various times through the 50s/60s/70s didn’t have a weekend edition at all.
In Melbourne in the 1970s, all three commercial channels did similar Magazine segments to pad out the Sunday news bulletin on what was routinely a slow news day. HSV7 had Camera Seven, GTV9 had Sunday Magazine. ATV0 had one as well but I can’t remember what it was called.
I wonder what the difference was between Willessee at 6 and Willessee at 7?
Maybe one had more long form interviews?
Apparently, Willesee at 6 (Sydney only) was more lighter stories, lifestyle, etc. Combined with the news, seemingly an attempt to try and knock off Ten’s news hour. (Seven tried it again a few years later with Seven Sydney News in the 6.00 half-hour leading into Seven National News.)
Willesee At 7 was the national show that was more conventional current affairs / interviews
Willesse at 6 was replaced in July 1979 by Makin Time hosted by Paul Makin which was axed after two weeks.
SMH, 6 July 1979.
Willesee lost interest in hosting 2 shows and decided to delegate the 6.00 show to one of his reporters?
Paul Makin was recently almost “axed” by the ACMA when they found his “narrowcast” station in Port Douglas, Fab FM, was not really narrowcast at all … after fifty years in the broadcasting business, Paul claimed ignorance of the rules and got off with an undertaking to be a good boy in future …
My memory is that Willesse at 6 wasn’t really working in the ratings, but Makin was worse and was a disaster.
to have a show axed after two weeks in 1979 is pretty dire. Even the benchmark in TV flops, Arcade, got 6 weeks!
