Was there widespread outrage about the local news being reduced to a statewide bulletin?

Suprising to see a James Bond film on 10 otherwise the tv rather entraining

All commercials have had the Bond rights as different times over the decades.

It was only amalgamated in Bendigo and Gippsland. The other regions (Ballarat and Shepp) lost their local news from SCN pretty quickly - very similar to Ten Capital’s expansion into Wollongong etc.

At least that news set lived on for about another 25 years on Southern Cross Tas!

Southern Cross never really did specific local news for Ballarat, Shepparton and Albury. They usually just provided an alternative program in the half-hour that Bendigo and Gippsland had their local news.

When Southern Cross became SCN, the Bendigo local news was extended to also cover Ballarat and Shepparton. It’s unclear just how many local news stories specific to Ballarat and Shepparton were featured, if any, or whether it was just a Bendigo bulletin that happened to be relayed to the adjacent regions. Gippsland still maintained its own specific local news. Albury went different again and relayed Ten News from Sydney as an alternative to the Melbourne bulletins on relay on ABC, Prime and VIC TV/WIN.

Then it appears at some stage the two SCN local bulletins were combined to become News At Six as a statewide bulletin (Albury, unclear?) Until the name change to Ten Victoria and all local content was wiped out entirely.

I don’t know how long Albury maintained the relay of the Sydney Ten news bulletin in place of Melbourne’s.

Not that I am aware of. Keep in mind, too, that VIC TV was already providing local news in all these regions, and ratings at the time implied that SCN as a Ten affiliate did not benefit from any loyalty from viewers in its heritage markets from the minute that the new channels came to town.

Although the Bendigo Advertiser did run an editorial criticising the move to axe all news from SCN entirely. I must try and find it.

Brisbane for the same day. Instead of James Bond, TV0 ran an ad for Neighbours

I have that issue of TV Week. It was one of the first that I bought off ebay in the early 2000s. It was a Tasmanian edition so this Melbourne guide would have been in it. I was devastated to find that the program guide insert was missing! The seller had claimed not to be familiar with the magazine and unaware that the section was missing, and I hadn’t thought to check before bidding. Lesson learned!

A bit of a late start on VEW and GTW…

GTW was only a few years old at that stage, and VEW I imagine didn’t have much to spend on programming. Both not big markets.

btw, the TV Week Appreciation Page on Facebook has the week’s programs for WA from 21-27 May 1988 which just happened to be the first week of NEW10 in Perth, which is very interesting.

For some reason (maybe due to reader feedback?), TV Week later swapped over SBS and GWN, so SBS got the page at the back of the listings and GWN was returned to the main Perth listing pages.

“The War of the Eggs” - adults only

Nudists throwing eggs at each other?

Was Television Tutorial on ATN a show on how to operate a TV?

Probably due to it’s small population.

Might have been some sort of DIY course. Or adult education to please the ABCB.

Would be funny if it was an actual tutorial on how to operate a TV.

“First, place hand on knob. Second, switch knob to ON position…”

What was the $50,000 Letterbox?

It was a game show produced at TVW7, Perth, but was also picked up by some Seven Network stations in other cities. Hosted by Paul Makin and later Gary Carvolth. Also featured Ann Sanders as a co-host at some stage.

Would’ve been funnier if it was a letterbox worth $50,000.
