Probably as product of the time, before exclusive rights contracts.

If you zoom in on this photo from kooyong, you can see each network’s plus radio boxes. Not sure why TCN and GTV had different teams there.

That’s right. Launch date was 1 March 1975.

Stations were allowed to show test patterns in color. And sporting events. Though there were time limits on how much could be shown. Bit surprised to see Mayberry RFD on TEN-10 and Room 222 on ATV-0 listed as being in color. Didn’t think the rule applied to non-sports programming.

That was only in the first few weeks of colour tests. The allowance later extended to selected episodes of news and general programming and an increase of hours allowed.

e.g. Countdown was allowed to air in colour from its first episode in November 1974

There was also quite a fair bit of programming in colour on Christmas Day

I remember them promoting their infomercial free overnight schedule at the time

Of course! Should have remembered that. ABC made a big deal of it.

Yeah, that didn’t last long

ATV0’s second day of transmission leaves a few effective “TBA” entries, although TV Week makes some guesses as what they are.

Turns out the TBAs were:

4.30pm Movie: The Lady From Lisbon (with news at 5.45 not 5.15)
6.00pm Maverick
7.00pm Sergeant Bilko
7.30pm Bonanza

Guessing someone was having a laugh when they inserted the description “Longest running news service in Australian television history” for the news on ATV-0 at 5:15 pm.

Haha i think they were referring to the bulletin being 45 minutes rather than the oppositions’ 30 minutes. Badly worded though.

As it turned out it was only 45 minutes on weeknights. Weekend bulletins were 15 minutes.

I used to misread the “Topical” description as “tropical”, which led to a bit confusion for a bit.

Sydney - Monday 28 December 1964. It was the day The Samurai premiered on TCN-9 at 3:30pm. It was reported to be the first Japanese series on Australian television. It was notorious for the comical English language dubbing.

From Boxing Day 1965 the star Koichi Ose did a week long series of shows at the Sydney Stadium, and shows in Melbourne. Some photos from the NAA:

I was very little at the time, but I can never remember the weird AFL scheduling they used to do back then. And 10 had no news service except at 12am! So odd!

Yeah they axed the local news and just kept the national late news. It wasn’t always as late as midnight

Ah I assumed they always had the 5pm national bulletin after that.

There was also VFA Football on ABC TV in Victoria live as the Competition was about to become Defunct and taken over by the Victorian State Football League who merged the Association and Former VFL/AFL Resevres Competition in the new VFL in 2000.

Here’s a clip of the ABC team of Peter Gee, Phil Cleary and Sam Kekovich discussing the demise of the VFA. Courtesy of Gezza1967 who has a trove of sports nostalgia on YouTube

What did you find weird about it? I used to love getting home from a match and seeing if my team had made the replay. That day, Drew Morphett called the match at Waverley before making the trip back to Dorcas St.
