Am guessing this might have been the first season? Certainly developed into a primetime hit a bit later.

I see that Seinfeld aired in NZ before it made its Australian television premiere in September 1993 on Nine (starting with Season 3) before it moved to Ten in December (Season 4).

This wasn’t the first time Seinfeld aired on New Zealand screens. The first five Seinfeld episodes, I think (from my memory), were shown in a weekday 2pm slot on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) during October 1990 - consult your local library for older issues of the NZ Listener if you can.

At 11.30am on the morning of Monday 7 October 1991, New Zealand Today premiered on TV One (now TVNZ 1).

Hosted by Bob Parker and Suzy Aiken (now Suzy Clarkson) with regulars Gwendoline Smith, Nancy Prebble, Dr Steve Culpan and Nigel Godfrey, New Zealand Today was a daytime chat show packed with interviews, entertainment and advertorials in a magazine-style format. According to the Listener, it was initially going to be called The Today Show , but the name was changed to New Zealand Today to avert confusion from its American (NBC) and Australian (Channel Nine) counterparts.

New Zealand Today is not related to the comedy show of the same name, which is hosted by Guy Williams and has been broadcast on Three since 2019.

Two new TVNZ shows made their debuts that night: Visual Symphonies on TV One (now TVNZ 1) and The Paradise Picture Show on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2).

Produced in-house by TVNZ with funding from NZ On Air, Visual Symphonies was a 10-part comedy/documentary series which followed Lynn of Tawa (a most famous Kiwi icon with a strong ‘New Zild’ accent, created and portrayed by Ginette McDonald) on a journey through New Zealand and Australia. The first episode - which aired at 9.35pm on TV One - saw Lynn going south to Otago, making haggis, getting on the piste with a ski instructor and giving Leeza Gibbons (formerly of Entertainment This Week/Entertainment Tonight fame) some sisterly counsel.

Over on Channel 2, The Paradise Picture Show premiered at 7.30pm. Hosted by Mark Leishman, Jude Kirk (now Jude Dobson) and crazy newcomer Clark Bent (portrayed by Jeremy Corbett of 7 Days fame), The Paradise Picture Show was a magazine-style infotainment series that looked at what was happening around New Zealand; it also included NZ TV bloopers and a segment named “Play It Again, Jude” that replayed viewers’ favourite scenes from television. The show returned in early 1992 with Simon Barnett taking over from Mark Leishman as host, according to the Listener.
