@OnAir That’s correct. Richard Wilkins (from Australia’s Channel Nine) was brought back to NZ to host Celebrity Squares and various local celebrities, including Polly Gillespie, alternated in the centre square.
In fact, Celebrity Squares was recorded in front of a live audience at the Avalon Television Studios in Wellington and there was another game show called Off the Planet (from Grundy Television), which was also recorded at Avalon. Hosted by Nick Eynon (now Nick Piper) and his alien sidekick Razzo, Off the Planet was a new concept in five-nights-a-week game shows in which two teams of two family members and a celebrity competed against other to win prizes.
Both Celebrity Squares (TVNZ) and Off the Planet (TV3 [now Three]) didn’t last long due to poor ratings… I think.
Hollywood Squares, starring Whoopi Goldberg with Tom Bergeron as host, was shown on TV3 from the summer of 1999/2000 until 2001. It was initially shown at 7pm (following 3 News, now known as Newshub) before moving to the earlier timeslot of 5pm as a popular lead-in to Judge Judy (at 5.30pm).
@OnAir About 70 episodes of Off the Planet were produced and TV3 (now Three) initially aired it at 7pm, moving reruns of Home Improvement to 5.30pm as a lead-in to the news. Within a few weeks, due to poor ratings and strong competition from Holmes on TV One (now TVNZ 1) and Shortland Street on TV2 (now TVNZ 2), the show was moved to 5.30pm before it had been axed by mid-1997.

This long-running travelling TV game show pitted towns against each other in a series of physical challenges. Leveraging nostalgia for a fast-fading time when NZ’s population (and identity) resided in rural hub towns, Top Town was Kiwi light-entertainment gold.
The 1977 final, introduced by (Sir) Howard Morrison and radio host Paddy O’Donnell, was broadcast on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 7pm on the evening of Saturday 5 March that year. It was recorded in front of a large crowd at Okara Park, Whangarei, as they watched Timaru, Greymouth, Waihi and Woodville compete for civic bragging rights in the sun. Keep an eye out for short shorts, jockettes, greasy poles, ‘balloon baloney’, and beautiful scorer Theresa.
You can watch the 1977 Top Town final via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

The Grass Is Greener, a six-part documentary series on New Zealanders living in Australia at the time, premiered on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 7pm on the evening of Saturday 30 March 1991.
Director (Dame) Jane Campion, actor (Sir) Sam Neill, comedian/writer John Clarke, Dragon’s Marc and Todd Hunter, promoter/agent Harry M Miller, and current affairs anchor Derryn Hinch were all profiled throughout the series.
The Grass Is Greener was produced by Judy Rymer (who directed three episodes) and cameraman Bayly Watson (Carmen), who died soon after working on it.
You can watch the first episode, focusing on Sam Neill, via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.
Meanwhile, Sky Sport had live racing from Ellerslie (including the Easter Handicap) during the Davis Cup tennis, and Sky Movies took us through the night to the early hours of Easter Sunday with the Easter Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon.

On the evening of Monday 31 March 1980, the newly formed TVNZ brought back the four regional news magazine programmes: Top Half (Auckland), Today Tonight (Wellington), The Mainland Touch (Christchurch) and 7.30 South (Dunedin).
Each regional magazine offered a mix of the day’s news, current affairs and features, drawing on TVNZ’s newsgathering resources in the four main centres.
To me, the regional magazines were inspired by the NZBC’s Town and Around, which covered everything from current affairs to visiting celebrities, slapstick and stunts during the 1960s. Town and Around was replaced in 1970 by This Day in Auckland, Newsview in Wellington and The South Tonight in Christchurch and Dunedin. By 1974, Auckland’s This Day was renamed Look North, and by 1975 the regional magazines were cut as the NZBC ceased to exist.
TV One’s (now TVNZ 1) main evening news bulletin, at 6.30pm, included 10 minutes of regional news from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. On Sundays, a regional current affairs programme called Sunday’s World was shown at 6.45pm (right after the 6.30pm news) and ran for 15 minutes.
When TV2 South Pacific Television (now TVNZ 2) came along, its 7pm news bulletin included 20 minutes of regional news from Auckland and Christchurch. Within months of launch, the Waikato/Bay of Plenty and Wellington joined in.
