2 South Tonight’s? I wouldn’t call Christchurch “South”.

Given it’s in the South Island, hard to argue…

@Damo In the early 1970s the name “The South Tonight” was shared by CHTV3 Christchurch and DNTV2 Dunedin respectively. For viewers in Christchurch, that city’s South Tonight (fronted by Rodney Bryant and Bryan Allpress) was the most popular until it ended in 1975.

The end of NZBC TV marked the arrival of TV One (now TVNZ 1) and the regional magazines were replaced by local news opt-outs for 10 minutes during the main evening bulletin (at 6.30pm).

When TVNZ came along in 1980, the regional magazines were brought back and Christchurch had its own name - The Mainland Touch. In Dunedin there was 7.30 South (named after its original 7.30pm timeslot) before changing to The South Tonight (1970-75).

Why the French-themed programming? Was this intended for French Polynesians living in New Zealand? Or was it just filler programming that the NZBC got at a good price? (I know that back then the ORTF even distributed some programming free of charge to interested broadcasters as long as it wasn’t interrupted by commercials.) Or something else?

These were only filler programming, which aired on NZBC TV many years ago.

Two blockbuster miniseries aired on both Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) and TV3 (now Three) on this day (19 March) in 1990.

Bangkok Hilton screened at 8.30pm on Channel 2 and ran for three nights. Described by TVNZ as ‘Australia’s most celebrated miniseries’, it starred Nicole Kidman as Katrina Stanton, who left her home country and her domineering family to search for the father she had never known. Betrayed by the man she loved, she was arrested en-route back to Australia for drug possession in Bangkok (where drug trafficking faces the death penalty).

At the same time, Shaka Zulu screened on TV3 and ran for five nights in that timeslot. It was about Shaka Zulu (as the title suggests), the warrior king who united tribes into a single Zulu nation.

Speaking of daytime television, a new Australian soap - The Power, The Passion - made its debut on TV3 that day. First aired in March 1989 on the Seven Network (which was also known as the Australian Television Network at the time), the series was devised to lure audiences away from US imports as The Bold and the Beautiful (on Network Ten) and The Young and the Restless (on the Nine Network) but failed to make an impact and was cancelled by Seven due to low ratings and strong competition from Ray Martin’s Midday Show (on Nine). A total of 168 episodes were produced.
