“D’oh!”

The Simpsons came to NZ TV screens and premiered on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) at 9pm on the evening of Friday 4 January 1991.

With more than 600 episodes to date, The Simpsons is, by far and away, the longest running animated series and the longest running programme in the history of television. When The Simpsons began screening in NZ it was shown late (9pm) on a Friday night.

Other programmes airing on Channel 2 that night included the premieres of Top Cops (a documentary series which dramatised stories from the case files of US police officers) and In Living Color (a US sketch comedy series which starred Keenan Ivory Wayans and launched the career of Jim Carrey, who went on to star in such films as The Mask, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Batman Forever, Liar Liar and many more).

Meanwhile. TV3 (now Three) had live coverage from the quarterfinals of the US$175,000 BP men’s national tennis championships being played at the Renouf Tennis Centre in Wellington. Coverage started at 11am and ran until 5.30pm when Oprah took over.

It first aired in NZ on the same day it aired in the UK (12 hours before it aired in the UK, because time zones): Sunday 23rd September 1984 at 8:20pm on Television One.

What The? The Simpsons debuted in New Zealand, One month before Australia? I’m Jealous!

@TheStyles83 You’re always jealous! Why? Because we, as New Zealanders, were the first to see The Simpsons down under (in January 1991)!

Speaking of British soaps, we were the first to see Emmerdale (in October 1983 when it was known as Emmerdale Farm) and EastEnders (in August 1985) - just years before the Australians saw them.

EastEnders was shown to Australians on ABC TV on 5 January 1987 two years after BBC1 debut that ran till 4 July 1991 after the broadcaster unable to get more episodes from the UK. UKTV would pick this series up in 1999 and continues to this day and New Zealand TV have not broadcasted EastEnders free to air since 2009. Coronation Street and Emmerdale reappeared on Australian FTA TV on 7Two as UKTV still have new express episodes. The Simpsons would have its Australian TV debut in 10 February 1991 on Network Ten until end of 2017 where Ten termites Fox deal when CBS brought the station.

@Sheldon_Betteridge Back in my home country, EastEnders was first broadcast to us as New Zealanders on TVNZ on the evening of Friday 30 August 1985 - about seven months after it aired on the BBC.

Although it was produced as two half hour episodes per week, EastEnders was shown in a ‘double episode’ format at 7.30pm on a Friday night and slipped into Coronation Street’s slot that night, according to the NZ Listener. The Street was dropping back to one broadcast per week (still a double episode at the time) on a Thursday night, as New Zealand was only a few weeks behind the original British broadcasts - which was as close as we were going to get.
