@OnAir On the evening of Wednesday 19 October 1994 (overnight Thursday 20 October), the Goodnight Kiwi cartoon was broadcast and Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) ended transmission for the very last time. On the next day, TVNZ started to broadcast for 24 hours via Channel 2, so there was no need to use the Goodnight Kiwi cartoon anymore. So it retired.

TV One (now TVNZ 1) continued to open and close transmission each day with the national anthem until Sunday 19 March 1995 (overnight Monday 20 March) when the channel moved to 24 hour transmission and carried an overnight feed of BBC World (now BBC World News), delivered by satellite, for the very first time. Earlier this year, the BBC announced that BBC World News and the UK’s BBC News channel will be merged into a new channel, to be known as BBC News, from April 2023.

A old silent movie at 10am. One would be safe to assume it would have had some sort of piano backing track to ensure there was some audio going out on the transmission?

Kinda. In fact, “Our Hospitality” used slapstick and situational comedy (accompanied by symphonic music) to tell the story of Willie McKay, caught in the middle of the infamous “Canfield/McKay” feud, an obvious satire of the real-life Hatfield/McCoy feud.

Do have any listings for Terry and the Gunrunners Paddy?

What was Sky8 ?

@Leotv Launched in October 1994, Sky 8 was, in fact, a temporary channel prior to the full launch of the Discovery Channel to us as New Zealanders in December that year, as the Discovery feed wasn’t beaming in via satellite to Sky’s Auckland headquarters at the time.

Sky 8 consisted solely of movies, documentaries, live concerts and music via Country Music Radio and Country Music Video respectively, plus live racing via the Trackside Channel as a free-to-air broadcast.
