The Gulf War - waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq’s invasion and annexation of Kuwait arising from oil pricing and production disputes - commenced on 17 January 1991 and most of the programmes, as published in the Listener, were preempted by full coverage of the war.

In response, TV3 (now Three) extended its main evening news to an hour long and moved the start time for the news to 6pm. Once the Gulf War was over, the network continued to screen an hour-long news bulletin at 6pm with a half hour bulletin on weekends and over the Christmas/New Year holiday period.

All I can say is thank goodness we no longer have to put up with 90 minute interruptions to live sport like this.

Didnt Home and Away finish up at TV3 two weeks earlier for what reason?

I don’t know. When TV3 (now Three) first started, coverage was limited. In September 1992, TVNZ secured the broadcast rights to the Australian soap and “Home and Away” made a welcome return, although it was shown on TV One in a 3.30pm timeslot.

It would later move to Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2), then nearly a decade later TV3 have them again . There is my theory of Home and Away screening on TVNZ 1 today what would be weird. The only Australian soap that is suited to TVNZ 1 is Neighbours
