@TelevisionAU @OnAir @Leotv @LiamP The Australian soap “Home and Away” - which initially focused on Tom and Pippa Fletcher and their foster family as they moved to the coastal town of Summer Bay - made its New Zealand television debut on TV3 (now Three) with a movie-length pilot at 7.30pm on the evening of Tuesday 5 December 1989, although the pilot was broken down into two parts (over two nights in the 7.30-8.30pm slot).

Within the next week, “Home and Away” was initially shown in an hour-long/double episode format (i.e. two individual half hour episodes, although the series was produced as five episodes per week) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm.

After “Home and Away”, “The Great Wall of Iron” - a four-part documentary series on the People’s Liberation Army of China - followed at 8.30pm with newsreading legend Philip Sherry, who died recently, as host/narrator for the New Zealand version (replacing Jack Thompson in the international version).

This unique and exclusive look into the armed forces of China traced its history, development. In the light of the tragic events in Tiananmen Square it gave a timely look at its current state. “The Great Wall of Iron” was originally produced by the Beyond International Group (the producers of “Beyond 2000”) in conjunction with the BBC, but the New Zealand version was produced exclusively for TV3.

British legal drama “Rumpole of the Bailey”, with Leo McKern in the title role, followed at 9.30pm.

@OnAir @Leotv In December 1990 Dame Cath Tizard, who died recently, became New Zealand’s 16th Governor-General.

The documentary “Dame Cath Moves Up” - which screened on TV3 (now Three) at 9.30pm on the evening of Tuesday 11 December 1990 - profiled the personal and political style of Dame Cath as a straight-speaking woman, and followed her journey from a working class household in small-town rural New Zealand to the Queen’s representative in Government House at the time.

You can watch the documentary through NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.
