E Street made its New Zealand television debut on TV3 (now Three) at 7.30pm on the evening of Thursday 28 February 1991, beginning with a feature-length pilot (first seen on Australia’s Network Ten two years earlier). By mid-year, the show was dropped and replaced with The Ralston Group (with Bill Ralston), followed at 8pm by the British sitcom Shelley.

In 1992, however, E Street was soon picked up by TVNZ and screened on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) on Fridays at 7.30pm but moved to five afternoons a week on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at around 2.30pm just several months later. Unlike Australia and Britain, the show was not hugely popular with New Zealand audiences (I think).

Back on 3, the Australian medical drama GP was shown at 9.30pm on Thursday nights during the early part of 1991. Several years later, TVNZ picked it up.
