Classic Commercials

I would do the same but money is a bit of an issue at the moment. Will get around to doing it though.

I presume the Fantastic Furniture ad came out first?

Also, the “banned” ad:

Sic 'em Rex!

Banned ad… it ran for at least 2 years so a bit late to ban it by that point.

i would have thought it’s a pretty low level rude word, not worth banning any ad over.

It is true that a lot of swear words have lost their original impact and due to increased exposure and normalisation many have lost their shock value or original meaning. I’d say if enough people complained and it is deemed offensive, then they ban it.

I remember in my workplace about 15/20 years ago that a person kept calling their workmate a “bugger” and that workmate asked them to stop. When she wouldn’t stop doing it, he reported her to the boss and she was on report.

We were discussing it in the office at the time and people were saying “but it’s used in a commercial” and some workmates said that in the past, it was really offensive to most people. Most people didn’t know the original meaning.

Some of the older workmates talked about how words change and how they would not dare to even use the word “bum” in front of their parents growing up but now their kids said “arse” as if it was nothing.

“Nah piss off!”

I’ve listened to that 12th Man record a hundred times at least and laughed at this but never knew the reference - clearly just that bit too young. Thanks for sharing.

I put banned in quotation marks for a reason :stuck_out_tongue:. It’s probably round up on a few banned commercial lists/compilations despite not being banned (and is even referenced in the latest of the Hilux ads).

To celebrate election day, here is a classic AEC ad from 2001:

Full “dreams come true” NSW Lotto jingle:

The Kiwis are back to seek revenge… and there’s Willis, and Botham, and friends…

What a great ad. What I can’t understand though, is that with this superb ad that ran over an entire summer, when I watch it on Youtube it strangely goes to ‘Cmon AUSSIE’, whereas the original clearly said ‘C’mon Kiwi c’mon c’mon, Come on Kiwi c’mon.’

For me at least, and a nation of cricket fans this may be some kind of Mandela effect.

Okay one that i remember from the mid 90s was a weird ad for the Toyota Vienta. I haven’t been able to find it on YouTube. What made it weird to me was the voiceover was in French and just had subtitles slapped on it. It confused my Dad at the time as well. To paraphrase what he said was Advertising a Japanese car in Australia by speaking French.

Looking back on it i suspect was a cost saving measure by slapping on subtitles on an ad from overseas
