CBS News

Why can’t we be independently and uniquely Australian? Do/did we really need to be a CBS 2.0?

Whilst I’m sure many of us would like to see more from 10 locally by way of news & current affairs, that ship has long sailed.

I believe what we’re seeing now is probably as good as it will be for some time, given the state of the industry and advertising market.

But as you suggest, this conversation is probably suited to a better thread than CBS.

It’s a pity Paramount doesn’t just have one news division and 10 is a part of it, sharing resources and finding synergies etc but replicating CBS approach and branding in Australia would not work. We’re not America.

Exactly, synergies.

I am not suggesting any of the content is American. I am suggesting it may be a great idea to bring across those IPs, the resources, the budget and really own each market in Australia. Really go hyper local. Viewers are savvy enough to know CBS is a global brand and I think it might be what 10 needs. Or not, just drop the CBS bit.

It’s a hypothetical question. A global streamlining may suit ‘the state of the industry and the advertising market’. But focus your public facing brand as hyper Melbourne. Hyper Brisbane. Become part of the community, but with the world wide resources of CBS.

Ex 10 news boss Ross Dagan is leading CBS’ news and has been for some time now, given his remit doesn’t cover Australia, but you’d think after what - almost 7 years of ownership, if there was efficiencies to be had by finding better synergies between the organisations for news gathering and presentation they’d have made them by now.

Look at Three in NZ, has the same common ownership as CNN, but even they couldn’t save local news there.

I believe there was a real support system from CBS News before the Viacom takeover. It crumbled after that.

Remember the CBS theme music injected into The Project (which I loved btw).

Anyway, I do often ponder the above scenario and “what might have been”. Others might have more insight.

BTW, CBS Evening News Plus on Apple TV’s CBS News app is also excellent.

Not sure it’s entirely an efficiencies argument either, just that there were/could be benefits for 10 in becoming part of the ecosystem - particularly in the digital/streaming sense.

I hope CBS sticks with the Evening News format. Something like this takes time to grow and prosper. If I was betting person, though, I’d wager they’ll go back to a more traditional format next year.

I think the dual-anchoring will be the first thing to go. It doesn’t seem to make much sense when a) they want the focus to be on the reporting, not the anchor(s) and b) it’s a half hour bulletin where (from what I’ve seen) all said anchors really do is read the lead-ins. Plus having two men read together seems a bit odd in this day and age.

Wow, didn’t realise that’s where he ended up. He’s been all over the place - Channel 10, TVNZ and now CBS.

Moving on to the locals… CBS News Miami is to debut a new virtual set on Sunday, under the same design as 24/7 and KPIX. From their first look, it seems to be more slanted on weather and sports coverages, so we’ll see how the news be presented in its former space.

Update The set’s NCAA Tournament show debut:

And as weather centre:

The Atlanta indie newscast is no more since the Valentines, according to former reporter Valencia Jones.

The timeslot is now delightfully more Family Feud reruns, previously on the station at 7 and 10pm.

Sounds a bit like Challenge in the UK that shows endless repeats of The Chase.

So the US version of 10 and the Dog House :stuck_out_tongue:

Some oddities in local affiliates: Weigel Broadcasting’s WDJT in Milwaukee unveiled new graphics on Tuesday, based on the current CBS O&O graphics and music. They’ve been adopting the network’s local news templates since 2014.

Loving the teal - a refreshing change from the usual blue/red/orange palette! The adaptation looks faithful too. It’s also on the occasion of their 29th year since they aired their first regular bulletin, the titles of which carried a smidge of teal too.

The set is dragging it down though - the light pillars beneath the (8-year old) desk is really aged!

Previously, Sarkes Tarzian’s KTVN Reno adopted the package with a new set and different music last January, even down to the larger state branding and the call letter box in the supers. They used the previous network template.

Rita Braver had retired from CBS News after 50 years. She hosted Sunday Morning for the last time on March 30.

Here we fucking go again…
