Canberra Radio

All the ‘Forever Classic’ stations I’ve heard mention smart speakers as a way of listening.

Either Gem has left hit104.7 or this is just ARN letting her spread across their network?

Can anyone confirm?

This is the case as I understand it

Interesting as I always thought SCA had full programming control over Canberra, with ARN managing people/employment.

Stephen Cenatiempo:

Many of you my know that after a susscessful nine-year radio career that saw me launch three radio programs and rack up nine Australian Commercial Radio Awards, I was made redundant in the great purge of 2019.

Then COVID-19 came along and needless to say the last six months were tough and I went through some pretty dark periods. To those who reached out and offered support, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

But I can now reveal some exciting news! From Monday 13th July I’m returning to radio launching a brand new local breakfast show on 2CC, talking all things Canberra.

I’m in the process of packing for the big move on Frjday, so have pity on me.

Interestingly, the return to local breakfast on 2CC comes almost exactly a year after the station started to relay Alan Jones live on breakfast.

Good to hear that 2CC is re-instating a local breakfast program after just a year of 2GB, although this really should’ve been done from the Monday after Alan Jones’ final show.

Yes- pathetic that they networked Alan Jones in the first place. Not that I listen to 2CC (and Canberra is a small ‘L’ liberal skewing ABC town) but a locally presented breakfast talk show is still required.

I thought Canberra skewed more Labor considering the number of public servants.
From memory the local ACT Assembly has more Labor pollies then Liberal.

As @dxnerd said, liberal (small L), not Liberal party (LNP).

It’s an anniversary i’m not particularly thrilled with

Wasn’t Tim Shaw’s letter to management convincing enough

I get the impression the original decision was more about getting rid of Tim than putting Alan on.

unfortunately Tim wasn’t the only casualty almost a year ago. But that’s in the past.

The problems with Canberra radio have been amplified since the relaunch of Hit and its repositioning to focus on an older female market.

The problem is, that the new Hit is not too dissimilar to the sound of KIIS Sydney - with older tracks thrown in.

The issue here, is you’ve got KIIS branding in Canberra, going up against the new Hit branding. Both brands, to those outside of Canberra, tell us that both stations are targeting women 30+.

However, as we know, this is not the case. Mix Canberra is actually more like Triple M.

For this, I believe Canberra radio is experiencing a similar problem to Perth radio.

And the solution IMO is to rebrand Hit104.7 (along with Hit92.9 Perth) to Triple M and focus on “Rock’s Greatest Hits”, and leave Mix106.3 (and Mix94.5 Perth) to join the Hit Network where the music isn’t too far from what both stations are currently playing (although it could be argued that Mix106.3 is more blokes than Mix94.5 at present).

Still - it would solve the issue of having both Mix and Hit deliver the same music format in Canberra.

Maybe just ditch the ‘Mix’ name and take on the 96fm music format and branding?

Would feel close enough to Triple M without taking the name.

Would/could SCA consider buying out ARN? They could then simply keep (s)hit 104.7 and rebrand Mix to Triple M Canberra. CBR needs more rock on the airwaves.

I’m not sure of the exact circumstances in which the Canberra joint ventures came to be. Why was it done here and not in any other radio market? Egalitarianism for this most egalitarian of cities?

I said this in the Hit forum, Mix 106.3 needs to join the Pure Gold network and adopt a log similar to WS fm / Gold 104.3 with a rock edge programmed locally.

Allow Hit 104.7 to stay on the Hit network and adopt their new position statement with a local music log,

I don’t think the solution is to flip the formats of each station with Mix becoming KIIS and Hit Triple M in a market with practically no local competition on the fm band.

I cannot see SCA buying out the licence of Mix 106.3 when they are in such a dire financial position in a market where the two stations in the joint own close to 40% of the market share.

From memory the joint venture came into affect when Austereo sold off 2CA and ARN 2CC to Capital Radio. Fm 104.7 and Mix 106.3 then entered into the joint venture agreement for programming and marketing.

ARN / SCA now have to consider which way to reposition Mix 106.3 / Hit 104.7 with the changes forced upon them from head office.

In fact, ARN sold off 2CC in December 1994 to Capital Radio, leaving them to only own 1 station (Canberra FM/Mix 106.3) before buying 50% of FM104.7 from Austereo & selling 50% of Mix 106.3 to Austereo.

Here is a document from ACCC dated 1997, agreeing on the Austereo/ARN joint-venture, with 2CA sold off to Capital Radio.
