All of the Willoughby transmitters are only standby, they only operate roughly 1 hour per week each, during Disaster Recovery testing.
Artarmon is the main site for ATN, TCN & TEN & has been for many years.
Turning off the transmitters at Willoughby is essentially only symbolic, & will just be turning the power circuit breaker off, as they aren’t & won’t be operational at the time on Monday morning.
New alternate/backup site for ATN, TCN & TEN will be at Gore Hill, along with ABC & SBS.
Interesting that they are all NEC DTV transmitters. Thought most broadcasters used R&S these days. Maybe they’re older ones. Will they be taken to another site?
They are all NEC’s & yes they are old, they were moved from Artarmon about 6 years ago, when the transmitters at Artarmon were replaced with R&S’s.
These were the original Digital TV transmitters at Artarmon when DTV began, they’ll be shipped to the other TXA state capital sites for spare parts, (no longer available from NEC).
I used to enjoy seeing the aerial view of the giant Nine logo on the roof of the studios at the start of the Mike Walsh Show when I was a kid. It was covered up when they added the executive level in the late '70s (early '80s?). Will be interesting to see if any evidence of it remains as they start peeling bits off the building.
Which I’m guessing doesn’t see much use these days! No sport on Ten anymore. Probably some late night MotoGP coverage comes out of ATV10 still? Can’t think of anything else.
