Yes they own all their facilities. No one said they were opening additional sites? They’re selling one site. Read above. What are you referring to with this comment?
I was referring to this
Isn’t that mostly to appease some of their critics?
Wasn’t one critic rather vocal in suggesting they should open an office and studios and move to Dubbo?
Vaguely recall something like that.
The office I was thinking of is now established at 3 Horwood Pl., Parramatta. Looks to be quite small from outside Google Streetview appearances.
If Artarmon site sold & if ABC forced to vacate, then …?
They’ll probably just use Ultimo for most of their big Sydney-based productions (which I thought was already the case, but anyway…) and hire out one of the external private production company studios if they need space for larger scale drama productions, etc?
Realistically, I don’t think we’d ever see the ABC not have a major presence in Sydney and/or Melbourne - certainly from a news/current affairs perspective at least.
Studios 25 & 26 were white elephants from the moment they were built, but became even more so from 2010 when Mark Scott plundered the budgets of drama, comedy and everything else to pay for his unbudgeted, unfunded news channel …
Why were they originally built how much use are they getting?
I’d say hundreds of millions dollars in cuts from Liberal governments is probably more to blame than the popular N24.
Perhaps Labor could’ve assisted with funding news channel since they were in government then.
… then you would be wrong … all of this happened before Tony Abbott got hold of the purse strings …
… they were asked for the additional money, but declined …
The ABC told the Senate in November 2014 that they were “currently considering the proposed sale of its Lanceley Place site”. Six years later the ABC is still considering selling it.
I think it’s very clear the facilities are not being used to their full potentially, or have been within the last 10 years. Most drama and comedy production are now based off sight or outside Sydney.
The large studios are not needed or required by the ABC on a full time bases. Also, it’s been previously reported that Ultimo have spare office space available in the city and were looking to rent this space out to external companies. Any ABC production or OB staff from North Sydney could be moved into this building.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s great that the ABC have these facilities, but in 2021 they’re not required and costs could be redeployed into other ABC departments around the country that are currently stretched.
Just a thought, had the ABC had sold off studios 25 and 26 back in 2014, it could have become a second private production space in Sydney, reducing the reliance on Fox Studios which is now fully occupied by Marvel movies. Shows like The Voice and The Masked Singer could have been filmed at Artarmon, instead of moving to western Sydney or Melbourne.
This studio in artarmon is available for hire by any organization:
Maybe NEP or a company of that ilk would like to purchase it.
TCN Nine Willoughby while operational, taken from TXA Willoughby rooftop, I apologize for trees in the way.
Last 2 weeks of TV transmission from TXA Willoughby (Old TCN Nine Sydney) site, I’ll turn the transmitters off for the last time here, at 8am on February 1st 2021, TXA hands the keys to the developers on 10th February, & I believe the tower will be pulled down by mid year 2021, (TXA isn’t pulling the tower down, so timeline is only what I’ve heard).
Are they even doing occasional broadcasts from there?
Would it be possible for a request of a recording, also congrats on being part of Australian Television History.
Of course the signal for the TCN digital multiplex on VHF-8 will continue, just at Artarmon along with Seven & Ten. The average viewer at home will notice very little (if any) discernable difference.
