Broadcast Facilities

Another bit of bluff the commercial TV networks run is the complexity and cost of running a DTV station: The cost and capability of TV studio equipment, particularly ST 2110 type, has come down greatly over the years and a lot of it is implemented in software rather than expensive custom hardware. The costings I have seen put DTV studio and playout gear not much above what you would pay for high-end videoconferencing equipment.

The same goes for the transmission equipment - it’s possible to cover a big town like Dubbo for example with just 100W of RF into a high gain stack antenna. Obviously 100W isn’t going to cut it at Yatpool but there are a lot of places where it does.

Some screenshots of inside Studio 1 at Sky News Australia in Macquarie Park. A view behind the desk facing towards the Paul Murray Live set when not in use. Also featured is presenter Gabriella Power.

That explains why there’s so much echo in their studio. It’s mostly hard surfaces in there.

It is. You don’t hear the echo as much during Paul Murray Live of course due to the fact there is Desk Mics or when presenters do pre-records as they are done either in Studios 3 or 4 which consists of a large LED TV with a desk and a camera in front of it.

Documents lodged by Design Intent Architecture and Management for Watchorn Street Developments PTY LTD state that the South Launceston site would include the partial demolition and refurbishment of the existing building, with its height reduced and the facade modernised.

Design Intent Architecture and Management director and architect Heath Clayton highlighted the potential of the proposed works, saying the transformation would open up the land for a variety of activities, including administration, clerical, technical, professional, or similar activities, presenting a range of potential business opportunities.

“Examples include a bank, call centre, consulting room, funeral parlour, medical centre, office, post office, real estate agency, residential support services, travel agency and veterinary centre,” Mr Clayton said.

“Channel 7 will remain on site as one of the tenants. Tenancy 2 will be Channel7 and may operate slightly later hours,” he said.

Found some plans on the City of Launceston website. Appears most of the building will be gutted, including the original studio.

Would be nice if someone from SCA did a video tour as they did in Canberra pre-demolition…

That would’ve been when Ten had just moved into Pyrmont (IIRC, they were previously at a small warehouse in Ultimo, before which they were based at North Ryde).

From past videos of the Late News I have seen, it would seem they split the desk used for the 5:00pm news in half - with the left hand side of it (where Ron Wilson would sit) being used for the Perth news (when production moved to Sydney in 2000) as well as the Late News, and the right-hand side (where Jessica Rowe/Tim Webster would sit) being used for Sports Tonight.

Yes that is correct. Was quite innovative of the time.

When they first moved in they had Bert come up and present GMA as a once off from the studios and they did a tour around. Oh to get footage of that these days. They did have a basic GMA replica set up here as they use to record the advertorials up in Sydney and insert them into GMA.

Then once Ten News relaunched in 2005, there was one long desk used for both the Sydney and Perth bulletins, and then a smaller desk used for the national bulletins.

Around this time, Sports Tonight also rebranded and got a dedicated desk that was silver/metal.

I thought I’d be more appropriate to continue this discussion here.
According to WIN’s website they still have an office in the old DDQ studios. Some of the vacant offices were put up for lease last year.

You’ve forgotten a big metro studio that still produces tv: ATV/Fremantle in Forest Hill. Then there’s ABC Collinswood but I don’t know if that’s the original building or an extension?
Then there’s of course old studios which have been sold and repurposed like NEN9, AMV4, RVN2, MVQ6, WBQ8 etc or vacant studios (ABV, NTD) but that’s another story.
