… I worked on the host broadcast of the Sydney Games and was in Athens a year later setting up for the next one, watching 9/11 live on CNN made me decide not to go to Salt Lake as originally planned - the idea of flying in a United aircraft over the US somehow had little appeal!!! in the unlikely event that I am still around when the five-ring circus arrives back in Oz I will be eighty and, either way, won’t be paying a great deal of attention to what is going on in BrisVegas, but as I gave the current head of OBS operations and planning her first Olympic gig back in 2002, I guess one way or another I will be there in spirit anyway!!

The Olympic Stadium is planned to immediately go into legacy mode once the Paralympics are over with a sprint to the first ball of the 2032-33 Ashes series which usually start in mid-November slated to be at in Brisbane for the first time in 11 years. Last summer’s series opened in Perth rather than Brisbane

Brisbane 2032 sport and discipline programme – update on eligibility process for candidate disciplines
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Olympic Programme Working Group (OPWG) has informed IOC-recognised International Federations (IFs) of the process for the disciplines of each sport to be considered by the IOC as candidate disciplines for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. The process provides flexibility in the consideration of Organising Committee-proposed sports and disciplines, reflecting the advanced stage of Brisbane 2032 planning.
- International Federations responsible for disciplines included in the Brisbane 2032 Host Contract may propose one additional discipline for consideration.
- Other IOC-recognised IFs may be eligible if their discipline was included in the Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 or LA28 Olympic programmes through an Organising Committee sports proposal.
Which disciplines can be considered for Brisbane 2032?
One of the central elements of the process is the distinction between disciplines already included in the agreed structure for Brisbane 2032 and those that could be added based on recent Olympic precedents. The International Federations responsible for disciplines included in the Games’ Host Contract will have the opportunity to propose an additional discipline for evaluation. In this way, the process does not begin from a closed list, but instead provides room for sports organisations to put forward alternatives within the framework established by the IOC.
The second group consists of other International Federations recognised by the IOC, which may be considered when the discipline they represent was included in the Olympic programmes of Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024 or Los Angeles 2028 through a proposal from the respective Organising Committee. This criterion makes it possible to draw on information and assessments developed at recent editions of the Games, meaning Brisbane 2032 does not have to start the evaluation of certain disciplines from scratch. The experience accumulated through these three processes will, precisely, form part of the foundation that the OPWG will use to advance the programme evaluation.
