  1. Coventry will have to resign from the Coordination chair

I believe so

Tuesday is the big day where the government reveals the infrastructure plan.

Talk is Vic Park will get a 60,000 seat stadium, Brisbane live entertainment center (if it goes ahead) will be at woolloongabba (the old Go-Print Site) but the state government is trying to scrap it and move funds elsewhere. the bee in this is that the arena is federally funded and the funds are set aside for the arena only (at this time… we will see what happens if the LNP win the election)

I thought it was Monday, but yeah it looks like Tuesday.

I would be surprised if the Brisbane Arena/Live gets scrapped altogether. They’re trying to save money on it by possibly involving the private sector and reallocate some of that federal funding. There has long been private sector interest in the Arena/Live venue, but the previous Labor state government wouldn’t entertain it and instead got agreement from the feds to fully fund it. It was the wrong call in the first place. If the private sector were interested in being involved they should have gone with that and got the Feds to provide the balance of the funding to the main stadium (and/or other venues), which they should have known would cost more than they originally “budgeted” for.

Govt to cut Brisbane Live Arena. Instead will build an aquatic centre. However, the Federal Govt is funding the Brisbane Live Arena so may not support a change.

Will also upgrade Pat Rafter Arena for tennis.

Wow. Did they say where the Aquatic Centre would be built? I’d be surprised if they scrap the Brisbane Arena altogether, perhaps they might invite the private sector to look at it again.

Brisbane Live surely is about the most useful post-Olympics venue.

I suppose the Brisbane Entertainment Centre fills the role, but compared to having something right near Roma St and state of the art, it’s going to eventually have the issues the Gabba has in terms of attracting major international events.

Swimming centres really don’t make sense imo - they end up massively overbuilt for what is just a big pool - outside the Olympics there’s no event that needs a 10th the capacity. The use of Rod Laver for the swimming championships in 2007 was a smart way to get good capacity - while at least MSAC’s 3000 ish for the Commonwealth Games is reasonable enough, compared to the 20k that Sydney’s Olympic swimming venue has, for absolutely no use now.

Near the Victoria Park stadium; story has hit other outlets now.

“The Queensland government is secretly preparing for a major last-minute backflip by agreeing to build a state-of-the-art National Aquatics Centre for the Brisbane 2032 Games”

Not much of a secret.

I agree with the long term value of the Brisbane Arena in the inner city, but I kinda think it will still go ahead with or without the games, and be partly privately funded. The private sector has shown strong interest in being involved but this was rejected by the previous Labor government. Until that time, as you say Boondall fills that role. I actually went to a concert there in February and there’s really nothing wrong with it. The proposed Arena wasn’t actually that much bigger in terms of capacity, just more centrally located.

Regarding the aquatic centre, I do see legacy value in that. It will be the national aquatic centre for Australia, with Swimming Australia headquartered there. It makes sense given the vast majority of Australian swimming champions end up Queensland based anyway.

If the rowing is to be held in Rockhampton, then the Queensland Government will need to be sure that both Bruce Highway and the rail line can cope with the huge amount of traffic between the city and Brisbane.

why are they even bothering to give him airtime? he should have been premier for a decade given the scale of win, but he squandered it all in one term and is now remembered as one of the worst premiers we ever had, probably only second to Bjelke-Petersen
