Brisbane 2032 Olympic Hosting Announcement

I don’t know… it kind of feels underwhelming, maybe because it’s 12 years away. I’m sure more hype will eventuate in years to come.

But we’ll done Brisbane.

Congratulations to Brisbane to host the 2032 Olympic Games. I think brisbane has the potential to host the Games. The points that I would highlight are

  • School terms. I think the term 2 Will be extended through to mid July.
  • AFL and NRL season. I’m not sure whether the Afl and NrL will suspend the season.

You’re ignoring that (rightly or wrongly) the IOC have adopted a new host city selection system which moves away from a bidding process to one where they select a ‘preferred’ host/s and work with them to see whether they should ultimately end up hosting the Olympics in question.

Whether the new model results in better outcomes for both the Olympics and host cities is something we have to wait and see

Currently being in a global pandemic hasn’t helped, but I think also the fact that Brisbane was almost certain to be awarded the 2032 Olympics before tonight has resulted in a lack of fanfare for the announcement.

28 years ago, the competition was a lot more tense - Sydney only beat Beijing by two votes.

Also consider this: Australia had a strong desire to host another Olympic Games for much of the 1980s and Early 90s - a period of history when we as a nation probably still felt that we weren’t yet truly validated by the rest of the world. This ultimately lead to two unsuccessful bids (Brisbane for 1992, Melbourne for 1996) before Juan Antonio Samaranch announced that The Winner was Sydney in the early hours of Friday September 24, 1993…which just so happened to be approximately a decade after another major sporting event triggered a global curiosity of Australia!

Hopefully I’m not being too biased towards my home city when I say that with Sydney 2000, we were at the right place at the right time of history with just about everything.

There are rules surrounding certain sporting events held during an Olympic Games. The 2000 AFL season ended 4 weeks earlier due to the Sydney Olympics

And the NRL Season began in February and Grand Final on August 27, around 2.5 weeks before the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympics .

Sydney had 3 weeks of school holidays for the “spring holidays” instead of the usual 2 during the 2000 Games

Seems like the audio issue only happened in Sydney. Was watching the Brisbane coverage and the announcement could be heard. Have gone back to watch Melbourne’s bulletin (which showed the announcement a few minutes after it was made) and that was fine too.

I live in Perth and was watching the stream on 7plus specifically for the Bid Announcement. Odd that it occured and it crashed multiple times as well. :man_shrugging:t3:

In 2032 I’d imagine we’ll see the AFL/NRL seasons commence a month or so earlier than usual, perhaps slightly shortened.

Don’t think our two biggest football codes will go down the season suspension route, because such a break would likely take a couple of months (taking into consideration the Paralympics as well as the Olympics) with Grand Finals probably not being played until Late November/Early December: By that time of year it’s probably too hot for a lot of footy players, plus you’d have effects of the Olympics rolling over into the 2032-33 Summer of Cricket, etc.

School holidays wise, what did non-NSW states do for 2000? Would they have adjusted the timing so kids/families could travel to Sydney for the Olympics?

Functional rather than inspirational though.

A process though bought in by AOC chief John Coates which just so happens to favour a city he’s tried to bid with before and failed.

These games aren’t for the people of Australia - they’re for John Coates. A bid backed by John Coates becomes the candidate in a selection system designed by John Coates. If that isn’t at least questioned then journalists are not doing their job.

From this article it’s quite clear the deal was done in 2015, not today. The main reason rival bids weren’t up t scratch is because they thought the race hadn’t even started, never mind was close to declaring a winner.

Here in WA, Sydney 2000 started whilst school was still going (September 15) Our 2-week break for Spring starts the day before the AFL Grand Final so we would have likely started the break right near the end of the games. I don’t have many memories of Sydney 2000 since I was only 7 when they occurred.

I was only 6 for Sydney 2000

Jessica was appropriately dressed for tonight’s news.

Somewhat off topic, but I may as well ask now since I don’t think it’s been mentioned on this forum yet: When did ABC News Queensland switch to HD?

7NEWS.com.au was also running a live stream and the audio was fine.

Would be interesting to see the television ratings for Brisbane (in 9 hours time) if there was a boost in the 4-6pm slot for the build up of the announcement. Also to see if Seven News is up in Bris Syd and Melb for the actual announcement.

I missed it I was at work. But congrats on the bargain Olympics.

In the leadup to the Sydney Olympics the ABC (at least) had an Olympics Reporter/Correspondent - but it was more aimed at the delivery of the games rather then the games themselves

Watching ScoMo celebrate of the announcement is just cringeworthy.
