Good luck to them, but won’t they simply lose business?
as a recreational punter (mostly on the dishlickers but also on sport) restricting the use of my own money would be a reason for me to not consider banking with them. it’s not like it’s taxpayer funded money i’m spening when when i throw $10 on a quaddie
They’ll just go elsewhere. Nice try for being socially conscious, and I know that’s what Bank Australia is trying to be, but there are alternatives.
This is for credit cards, so it’s not your money. Should never gamble with debt. Debit cards will still be able to be used for gambling.
if i pay my credit card off it is my money. anyway, they can decide to block this stuff and i can decide to not be a cutomer. they ahve obviously figured out that the losses by doing this do not exceed the revene
I guess the risk is a gambler won’t or can’t pay their credit card off.
I think that’s one of the reasons for the gambling ban. Many people rack up huge debts by using credit card on gambling.
potato, potato, it’s all the same.
They’re the same, but they choose their language very carefully. Like referring to “your team” to personalise the experience. Wagering is softer than gambling.
I have no idea why betting companies sponsoring competitions and some of their clubs doesn’t raise big red flags. Surely it would be ripe for match fixing.
Crown casinos has sought to distance itself from major shareholder and alleged shadow director James Packer by cancelling two agreements with the Packer company Consolidated Press Holdings. The agreements allowed Packer to have access to confidential Crown company information despite him not being an executive nor being a director, and CPH was receiving millions each year under a services agreement - an arrangement that allegedly caused a conflict of interest for two CPH executives who were also Crown directors.
It’s estimated today’s TAB crash turnover loss bill could top $100 million dollars - with between $7-10 million of that likely to be missing from being fed back into the racing industry itself.
Hard day for many of the meetings, with some delaying races hoping the systems would get back up and going. Adelaide officials cancelled their meeting and are holding it Monday instead.
At 8pm EDT the system is still down, meaning it’s approaching nearly 10 hours of downtime.
Just goes to show the racing industry lies through their teeth when they say that their sport stands on its own (without gambling).
The TAB system is still down this morning. Fortunately today is a quieter today in terms of racing.
EDIT 3.15pm AEDT: looks like the TAB system has been restored and betting can resume.
Goes without saying. It’s the lifeblood of the industry.
Updated statement on the outage here. Still some services like phone and retail betting which are still being restored. Story has also changed from a power outage to a fire. https://www.tabcorp.com.au/news-media/update-on-tabcorp-services-outage
Based on a preliminary assessment, a smoke and likely fire incident at a third-party managed data centre resulted in extensive damage to Tabcorp’s servers and associated infrastructure. This led to technical and systems outages, as well as the closure of TAB retail venues.
I think the TAB is down again.
They’ve taken wagering offline for maintenance according to tab.com.au
