Beijing Winter Olympics Coverage

I’m only interested in the figure skating,Australia has only 2 representatives,Men’s single and Women’s single skate.
Freestyle skiing is ok too ,Australia have had some success in this event

Sorry if this has been answered before, but why is there no live coverage of Olympic events on 7mate today? Is there not enough interest to warrant the use of two broadcast channels, or is it a rights limitation?

As far as I can tell there is only coverage on one channel - either Seven or 7Mate or rarely 7Two for the whole games. The 7Mate coverage only seems to be when the main channel is on News, Sunrise, The Chase or Home and Away etc.

Don’t know what others thought about the commentary for the Opening Ceremony. However, think Shirvington, Cooper & Nicholson did a pretty decent job. The trio provided the context needed for the event and info about each country during the Parade of Nations without being overbearing and making themselves the focus.

One thing I would say though is it was interesting how Seven decided to keep the focus entirely on the athletes/the Olympics and not touch upon geopolitical issues surrounding Beijing hosting these Winter Olympics. By contrast, other broadcasters like NBC, CBC and the BBC addressed it in someway before the Opening Ceremony and/or during it. I’m not saying what Seven did was right or wrong because I understand there’ll be divering views about it. Instead, just thought it was worth highlighting - especially because I didn’t pick up on how an Uyghur cross-country skier was one of the two final torchbearers until I tuned into the end of NBC’s coverage (following Seven’s broadcast) and the commentators were having a lengthy discussion about that.

Shirvo and Emma are perfect for afternoon hosts. Light, young, energetic… they’re great.
Shirvo did a great job with Eddy Bartholomew for last year’s Olympics as well.

Just my view and maybe a tad harsh, but didn’t think much of Edwina at Beijing 2008, Rio 2016, Pyeongchang 2018 or Tokyo 2020. To me seemed like she didn’t really want to be there. Also like a publicity thing to give her something else to do / for Sunrise. I understand she’s gone on maternity leave again, so possibly would’ve been used again at Beijing 2022 (coincidently 14 years after her last coverage there).

But agree Shirvington has carved out a successful career since returning to Seven, he’s very good.

Can be seen in a preview here:

Similar to the Tokyo set up but not quite as nice. They do have an “outside” area this time though - they introduced the highlights of the opening ceremony dress in full winter coats around a camp fire.

How’s that a coincidence?

Oh, I just meant in the sense that she did Beijing 2008 summer Olympics and would’ve most likely been returning to the exact same city nearly 14 years later for the Winter Olympics.

Eddy is always a class act no matter what the role.

Seven is terrible at utilising multi-channels and rely too much on 7+. What’s the point in having three multi-channels if at least one won’t be airing live sport.

People are streaming online now rather than watching linear coverage. It’s no longer 2008. You can stream every event and watch replays and minis on the app and on your smart TV.

and if you get bored with all those Olympics, you can watch the Blue Heelers channel

I think that statement has been proven otherwise, with Nine broadcasting the AO on 9 and 9Gem.
