Beauty and the Geek

Not another tentpole. Is that all they know these days?

This is the same network that aired Celebrity Apprentice three days a week recently. Judging by their recent trajectory with their shows airing 3-4 times a week, stripped reality is all they know.

I don’t think Nine planned Beauty and the Geek to be a tentpole. If not for the Tokyo Olympics, I reckon The Block will have taken over the 7.30pm timeslot right after Australian Ninja Warrior finishes, leaving BATG to 1-2 screenings a week.

Stripped reality is all Seven, Nine and 10 know - all of them would be utterly stuffed if the reality bubble ever bursts

10 seems to be a bit better (not much) than Nine or Seven. Survivor/Bachelor/Masked Singer usually airs for two days a week at most which is bearable and shows like The Cube are thankfully not stripped.

Beauty and the Geek: A new season with a whole lot of heart

Discover if opposites really do attract when one of Australia’s most heartfelt TV series, Beauty and the Geek, premieres on Sunday, July 11, at 7.00pm on Channel 9.

The 2021 reboot, hosted by beautiful and self-confessed dork Sophie Monk, has all the fun of the original series with a new layer of heart and warmth which will make audiences fall in love with the show all over again.

The 10 beauties and 10 geeks work together through a series of real-life challenges in the search to find a romantic spark or a lifelong friendship. Surprising connections are made as two very different worlds collide and strong partnerships bloom in the most unlikely and sometimes hilarious circumstances.

The beauties have their eyes and hearts opened to new possibilities as they help the geeks find their voice, and in return learn a thing or two from the geeks about stepping outside of their comfort zones.

The beauties include a professional theme park princess, a vivacious tanning and gym lover, a red carpet reporter and a criminology student and model. Among the geeks are a maths teacher, an ER doctor/wrestling fan, a motorsport fanatic and a law graduate.

Of course, the fan favourite makeovers are back. The geeks undergo jaw-dropping physical transformations to the delight of their beauties, and along with it a new layer of confidence.

The winning couples from each night’s challenge score one-on-one date time which could help them seed a connection and solidify a relationship. The couples who are not so successful, however, may end up in the bottom two, forced to duel it out in a challenge which will result in the losing couple going home. At the end of the series one couple will be declared the winner and take home $100,000.

Host Sophie Monk said: “A lot has changed since Beauty and the Geek was last on our screens. Today, geeks run the world and beauties are far more than just a pretty face. I can’t wait for audiences to watch on as they embark on a journey of self-discovery and see if we’re able to answer the age-old question – can opposites attract?”

With an open mind and an open heart, Beauty and the Geek is full of emotion, laughter, fun, and maybe even a little bit of true love.

Beauty and the Geek is produced by Endemol Shine Australia for Channel 9.

So what do we think about this reboot? Success? Flop? Moderate like Celebrity Apprentice?

I’d sway the third option but the promos aren’t as catchy and exciting as Celebrity Apprentice so it may sway the second option.

Also are they seriously going to go head on against Farmer Wants a Wife? That’s certainly going to work well…for Masterchef.

Kinda funny that they’ll be going up against each other considering they were both dropped by their original networks and then later picked up by their biggest rival - some truly bizarre programming.

Farmer Wants a Wife might have the upper hand since it aired last year and seems a bit more wholesome than this dating / love show.

I think it’s most likely going to flop.

I’m incredibly surprised to hear that…not really since arguably both Beauty & The Geek + Farmer Wants A Wife are the “originals” of a dating, relationship and wedding-themed “reality” genre our networks have been obsessed with for a few years now.

Yep, I agree.

As was established above :point_up_2:t3:

@killy06 Sorry, just noticed. Post has been deleted.

True in that Farmer is more about actual love than Beauty and the Geek ever was, but I reckon the latter might be a bit more appealing with the younger viewers in the same way shows like Love Island appeal to the younger ones.

Nine names major sponsors for Beauty and the Geek

Nine has announced the major sponsors for its highly anticipated reboot of Beauty and the Geek, with KFC, Fantastic Furniture and ALDI aligning their brands with the feelgood show of 2021.

Hosted by Sophie Monk, Beauty and the Geek premieres this Sunday, July 11, on Channel 9 and 9Now as 10 Beauties and 10 Geeks work through a series of real-life challenges in the search for a romantic spark or lifelong friendship.

Complementing the heartwarming and sometimes hilarious action, the series will feature bespoke in-show branding.

Nine’s Director of Powered, Liana Dubois, said the timing of the reboot of family-friendly Beauty and the Geek is perfect for brands.

“We’re tickled pink with the return of this feelgood favourite at a time when Australia needs a little escapism and a wholesome reason to smile. Beauty and the Geek is the perfect platform for brands looking to connect emotionally with the audience as we watch our couples step through the spectrum of human experiences,” Dubois said.

“The reach and deep engagement of the Beauty and the Geek audience is a delightfully geeky match for our brand partners, who are also capitalising creatively across the series.”

As part of KFC’s sponsorship, the in-show integration sees the KFC Food Truck featuring for the first time in an entertainment format. The truck will appear as the centrepiece of a themed Fancy Dress Party, playing a key moment as KFC caters for the Beauties and Geeks as they let their hair down. KFC integration will also appear late in the series as five Geeks play a game of “chicken and [poker] chips” and celebrate the achievement of being the last ones left in the hunt for love.

Kristi Woolrych, CMO of KFC Australia, said: “As Beauty and the Geek makes a return to our screens, we’re thrilled to be partnering with the show, which will see us bring our famous KFC Food Truck on-air for the first time.

“At KFC we love to bring people together over our signature Kentucky Fried Chicken, and we’re excited to see the Beauties and Geeks get to know each other and hopefully put a ‘wing’ on it at the end of the season.

“As we encourage fans to live in the moment with our ‘Fried Side of Life’ campaign, the partnership with Beauty and the Geek is a match made in heaven with the contestants putting themselves out of their comfort zone and hopefully finding the secret recipe for love.”

In-show integration will also see our Beauties and Geeks stumbling through the time-honoured tradition of ordering and assembling furniture together, all ordered online from Fantastic Furniture.

With brand integration complementing episodic storylines of the Beauties and Geeks “making nests”, Fantastic Furniture helps to make the couples feel that their apartments are more like a home and reflect their personalities. Fantastic Furniture will also have commercial break engagers with the tagline “when it feels like home, you feel like you”.

Will Dance, Head of Marketing for Fantastic Furniture, said: “As longtime fans of the show, we’re extremely excited to be partnering with Beauty and the Geek Australia. Whether you’re in the market for an Aussie-made sofa, a display cabinet for your model robots or a makeup mirror that shows your best self, at Fantastic Furniture we’ve got something for everyone.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re the Beauty or the Geek, because at Fantastic we know that when it feels like home, you feel like you.”

ALDI will also be in feelgood commercial break engagers that highlight fun and quirky moments with Geeks throughout the series.

Beauty and the Geek will premiere this Sunday, July 11 at 7pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

TV Tonight’s review:

Personally I think 2.5 stars is very generous. If the on-air promos I’ve seen are any indication of what the show is like, 0 or half a star would be more appropriate.
