BBC News/World News

BBC really does put alot of effort into shows that sometimes get a very small handful of viewers!

As they should, they seem to have a clearer idea of what the role of a public service broadcaster is than the ABC. If only the ABC cared as much about ABC News SA or even ABC News Vic.

Saying that, they also make a lot of commercial dreck like Strictly which should be on a commercial network/streamer.

Jesus I read the first part of that headline as
“BBC ask Huw Edwards to return” and was like :eyes:

You’re not the only one.

I have noticed that the BBC News stream available in Australia is not chromecast-compatible, also there is no app on Google TV. The only ways you can access it are on your laptop, computer or phone.

it’s a shame they can’t just stream on Youtube like every other news channel. I get why they can’t but it’s still a shame.

I was able to get BBC News cast on my TV by using Google Chrome on my laptop, right-clicking the screen and choosing “Cast”.

I’ve noticed numerous clips of BBC News coming from the London set.
Something happening on one of the alternate sets? (Studio B?)

Yes, according to a technical director’s twitter account, Studio B is undergoing checks of lighting and wiring so they’ve had to bring all the lighting rigs down for a few weeks.

Why would they be using Studio D (London studio), when either Studio E or C would be free?

This is what I found strange.

Studio E is used for the news channel, so that can’t be used. I think studio C has been decommissioned for the time being. I imagine they might refit it in time, like they did with E earlier this year.

The London bulletins actually come from studio B these days, so if that’s out of use, it probably makes sense to just have a straight swap and do the national news from D for a few weeks.

London still uses Studio D for weekend, breakfast and lunchtime bulletins.

Studio C has been used lately, definitely not decommissioned yet.

Was used, until a month ago. A lot can happen in a month.

The BBC World Service has announced that it will be touring the United States this September, bringing audiences live programming from Atlanta, Portland and St. Louis.

In the lead up to the US election, and working with partner stations across the US, The Roadshow will feature special broadcasts from Newshour, The Arts Hour on Tour and Unexpected Elements.

The Roadshow is a partnership between BBC World Service and US distributor American Public Media (APM).

Gwenan Roberts, Commissioning Editor, BBC World Service, says: “We are thrilled to announce The Roadshow where we will bring three beloved BBC World Service programmes on a tour of the US, in what is a critical time for the country as it prepares to head to the polls in November.”

“We’ll be taking the temperature of all facets of life in the country by being at the heart of the action, and demonstrating the breadth of World Service content across news, culture and science programming.”

Looking at the ABC revamp made me look at the BBC’s 24 hour news channel… and if you think ABC’s graphics are bad (which they are), the BBC’s make ABC look like a work of art. It’s just a mess… so much junk on the screen that really isn’t needed (IMO anyway). Some choice examples from the past couple of hours (TW: truly HORRIBLE design):

(Look at all that space around the text. There is no need for that strap to be so big. None at all. And WHY are they sticking to 4:3 safe areas in 2024? Al Jazeera, CNN, Sky UK are all 16:9 safe, so the BBC has no excuse.)

That second one truly gives me the ick. Why do they need to shove the presenter to the side of the screen in order to show some B-roll? Either show it full screen, or don’t show it at all. Or even have the presenter turn to another camera, and show the footage on a screen next to them. Or use the catwalk at the side of the studio. There are loads of different shots they can use now that the studio has been automated.

And as for this obsession with QR codes… I just don’t get it. They’re so 2016  typical BBC, always late to the party. Like why shunt everything to the side of the screen in order to accomodate a poxy QR code? You’re literally encouraging viewers to look at their phones, rather than watch your channel… it makes no sense. It honestly all makes the ABC’s new graphics look refined. And this…

…is just vile. They need to completely start again.

Anyway, rant over. I know I’m tragic, which is why I’m here in the first place  but it amazes me how bad the whole channel looks. Yet people on Pres Cafe try and gaslight you into thinking it all looks good…

TL;DR: BBC’s news channel looks vile and once you look at it, you’ll never cry about the ABC’s graphics again
