Meet the Australian Idol Top 30

Best of the best receive Golden Ticket

The final auditions cemented Australian Idol’s Top 30 tonight, as the international star-making sensation saw thousands of hopefuls vie for a shot at their dream, with only the most outstanding receiving a coveted Golden Ticket.

As the toughest and most surprising season yet, judges Marcia Hines, Kyle Sandilands and Amy Shark were looking for the ultimate performer: a singer with the sound, style and star quality to win the heart of the nation.

Marcia admitted: “This year, the bar has been set incredibly high.”

Amy declared: “I feel like I need to be firm. Surviving the music industry, especially now, is extremely challenging. You need to be very resilient to have a real shot of being in the Top 30 of Australian Idol.”

Kyle added: “This is show business. Only the toughest have what it takes to survive. Our job is to put the 30 best people up.”

Monday night on Australian Idol: Kyle Sandilands goes rogue, giving one contestant a second chance, as Idol’s Top 30 take to the stage and sing for a spot in the Top 21.

I think this is the first time three members of a family made it into the top 30: Jazz, her husband Chris, and her sister Jinja.

Synopsis for next week:

Sunday February 23

The final challenge of Top 30 week. Performers must sing with a live band in front of a live audience. Each hopeful must leave a lasting impression on the judges, otherwise they risk leaving the comp.

Monday February 24

Tonight the solo performances continue with the remaining contestants delivering the most thrilling & electrifying performances yet hoping to earn a coveted spot in the top 21, and avoid going home.

Kyle went rogue at the start of tonight’s episode, bringing back Bony who was eliminated at the auditions after performing with an autotune machine. So it’s Top 31 Week now.

The first challenge was Chorus Line challenge. The top 31 were divided into six groups, each singing from a song allocated by the judges. One person would be put on notice, and at the end of the day, three of the six contestants put on notice would be going home.

Guy in the yellow jacket had a bad attitude when put on notice and then eliminated. He needs to listen back to tonight’s episode. The judges were right.

Ricki-Lee would be guest judge on Tuesday’s episode, filling in for Kyle.

Kyle would return for Sunday’s episode (solo challenge) which would decide the top 21.

Very cheap, nasty and lazy.

I don’t mind it, she’s a great host and well known, former Idol star too.

Since they have two hosts anyway it’s an easy decision IMO.

It was possibly very last minute. Ricki-Lee did a great job.

Possibly an appointment for his brain tumour?

Ricki-Lee would fit in perfectly as a judge going forward, assuming Kyle won’t be around for live shows. It actually is nice and rare to have a full panel of female judges. Scott can easily take over the full hosting role.

I think the top 30 week was filmed in November last year when Kyle just took a day off.

Australian Idol reveals Top 21

Second chance shocks as young guns shine on stage

Tonight, Australian Idol’s final Top 21 stars were revealed following a series of bombshells and surprises that made the competition tougher than ever.

The hopefuls took on three massive challenges across four nights, with 25 contestants advancing through the chorus and overnight challenge. Next, they faced a make-or-break moment: performing solo with a live band and audience.

Marcia Hines revealed: “It’s designed to see how the singers work with a crowd and a live band. If you want to make it to the Top 21 you must show up.”

Amy Shark added: “We are looking for someone who can play live shows and captivate an audience.”

Some performers struggled while others soared in the pressure-cooker environment as contestants were either sent straight to the Top 21 or put on notice, facing potential elimination.

Four of Australia’s youngest Idols stunned in their solo challenge. Doonan’s Marshall Hamburger, 19; Keely Ellen, 17, from Bundaberg; and 16-year-olds Gisella Colletti from Perth and Hazel Sofia Symonds from Mildura, blew the judges away with performances beyond their years.

Kyle Sandilands dropped a bombshell on his fellow judges when he brought controversial Brisbane contender Bony Onyango, the 25-year-old who uses live autotune in his performances, back to the competition.

After Bony’s solo performance, Marcia admitted: “We are so happy Kyle did what he did.” Kyle added: “There are a lot of musos that think autotune is cheating. This guy makes his own beats and plays his own stuff. This is a popstar waiting to be discovered.”

Castle Hill’s Majeda Beatty, 26, was given another chance after forgetting lyrics and being put on notice three times during Top 30 week. The hip-hop singer acknowledged: “This is finally my moment to really prove myself and get the judges on my side.”

Early standouts Iilyish Retallick, the 17-year-old from Culcairn, and 29-year-old Jake Whittaker from Stockleigh, were both on notice after their solo performance but ultimately advanced to the Top 21.

Sunday night on Australian Idol: The Top 21 will transform and level up their singing, style and star power to prove they belong in the Top 12.

Australian Idol Continues 7.00pm Sunday on Seven and 7plus

How many chances did Majeda have? She forgot her lyrics in the first two rounds of top 31, and struggled during her solo performance. She should have been eliminated instead of Abbie.
