A wild tale of gangster ambition. The Instagram generation westie underworld collides with Sydney’s glamorous social elite. A world of spray tans, steroids, tatts, laundered drug money and Lamborghinis. All of this and the pursuit of a happy family life. It’s very funny, even amidst all the murders and mayhem.
It’s just the kind of crazy story that Gregor Jordan (Two Hands, Ned Kelly) is the perfect person to tell.
New local crime drama, AUSTRALIAN GANGSTER, is a Roadshow Rough Diamond production for Channel Seven, with major production investment from Screen Australia in association with Create NSW.
Some really high profile people involved. This could be huge if they get the casting right.
Written by Gregor Jordan (Two Hands) and Malcolm Knox (Romper Stomper, The Life, The Wonder Lover, A Private Man), produced by John Edwards & Dan Edwards and directed by Daina Reid (Paper Giants: The Birth Of Cleo, The Secret River, Offspring).
The two-part drama is a punchy, funny and violent adrenaline-ride through Sydney’s decadently gorgeous but completely inane world of crime. It’s just the kind of story that writer and director GregorJordan ( TwoHands,NedKelly ) is the perfect person to tell. According to Seven’s Director of Network Programming, Angus Ross, it will screen straight off the top (of the year). Seven screened a trailer to media but it is revealing no more while a legal case remains underway.
Angus Ross has told TV Tonight the series has been pushed back again.
We were planning to run Australian Gangster in February but there is an ongoing investigation which means we can’t. So we’re hoping it will be Q2 or the middle of the year.
Does Seven know something the rest of us don’t? Seems to me it is optimistic that the series can finally go to air without the risk of having it banned in NSW.
Inspired by true events, Australian Gangster is a fast, punchy and often funny rush through Sydney’s world of crime and gangland wars, told through the signature lens of writer/director Gregor Jordan ( Two Hands, Ned Kelly, Dirt Music ).
Growing up in an organised crime family, Pasquale “Pas” Barbaro (Alexander Bertrand) never had a shot at anything resembling a normal life. He is released from jail, but not before making an enemy of fellow inmate and Brothers For Life member, Mohammed “Little Crazy” Hamzy (Rahel Romahn).
A newly freed Barbaro is not concerned about playing it safe or hiding in the shadows. He is, however, concerned about looking good on Instagram.
Coming soon to Seven and 7plus, the story of Pas and his cohorts reflects the modern criminal world. “They are all about flaunting their wealth and their physical appearance to try and create an image of themselves that they can project to the world,” says director Gregor Jordan. “They represent a modern and interesting twist on the gangster genre.”

Based on this post, it looks like Australian Gangster will debut on Monday, September 13. (9-1-1: Lone Star has a double episode to finish its season next Monday, September 6)
