I’m an Aurora chaser, but I missed last night’s display I often wonder If this would have some kind of effect on Tropo.

Didn’t know this one existed… According to the ACMA lists, it’s from Waikerie and only 100 watts.

So that’s a great catch at about 230 kms from Ouyen!

Is that still just with an indoor antenna, or have you got an external one up now?

Internal antenna I’ve ordered an antenna twice the height of the default one on the radio which I can plug into an external antenna jack on the radio I can no longer get the outdoor antenna needed for FM radio, Before we went digital residents had antennas that received STV 8 & ABMV 4 Mildura only way I could get one is If someone had an old one laying around In a shed.

@dxnerd are you still in the Newcastle area tonight?

I am getting a bit of your 2BRW poking through under 2RE here right now. Conditions a bit better than average, good enough for RDS on ABCs from Batemans Bay and Canberra, commercials from both at lower levels. Goulburn town 89.5 and 90.3 ABCs received now too.

Only virtually

Might be one of the last chances to get 2BRW for the season, though April is likely to be warmer than average again.

I’ve had inland tropo eg. Brown Mountain as late as June before!

Not a super active morning from Ouyen but did manage to pick up a couple of stations:

89.3: 3PNN Horsham

93.9: 5PNN Renmark

95.7: 3ABCRN Nhill

95.9: 3PNN Murray Valley

102.1: 3MIL Murray Valley

103.7: 3ABCFM Murray Valley

105.1: 5ACBFM Renmark

105.3: 3JJJ Murray Valley

107.1: 3JJJ Ballarat

107.9: 3ABCRR Ballarat

Over west for a holiday and staying down near Dunsborough, surprised how poor reception of Perth FMs (including the new ABCs) is to the south. RDS possible along the coastal fringes in parts (I currently have it at Meelup Beach) but along the highway it started to get poor not far south of the Mandurah turn-offs.

720 is unsurprisingly still quite strong throughout here - if there’s been a power reduction it’s not that noticeable here. I can see a lot people being upset once it gets turned off in a couple of weeks.

I wonder if troposcatter is unusually poor at the moment due to TC Narelle and its associated instability. Nevertheless it would be indicative of winter conditions down that way, with the near constant wind and rain.

(As an aside, where’s the TEF…or are you prioritising MW DX from Asia/Africa?)

I actually forgot the TEF

And given the pink in the back of that shot is the suit being worn by offspring #2 who demanded to be held while I was checking this, time for DXing is very limited anyway. I don’t have enough time or hands to do both at once

One thing I have noticed about that part of the world is that the Margaret River Triple M outlet on 756kHz gets into Perth very well. Good ol water path. No sign of the Bunbury one at all.

I’ve noticed that too, but 756 is only really good reception along the coastal fringe of Perth. It disappears pretty quickly when you move inland towards the freeway and east of that.

Perth AM isn’t as strong the other way, particularly the commercials being further inland at Ascot. The Hamersley ABC TXs were pretty decent at Busselton when I last stayed there though for the same water path.

That’s a simulacrum of 2EC’s former coverage into coastal Sydney, 9 kHz to the right.

And I don’t care if you have two offspring+ a significant other in tow; the TEF is always top priority  I’ll put it down to your addled mind after too long in 20-25C dewpoints.

And I’ll be in Perth in less than 2 weeks now. Definitely taking my TEF, maybe even both of them!

Though I’m not sure what to do about the road trip I had planned down to Albany, Esperance and Kalgoorlie given the fuel shortages. Plan B is just go to Perth and fly back earlier. I’ll have to decide in the next few days.

I think if you stick to the South West you’d be OK, out towards Kalgoorlie may be an issue. Though being a major mining centre (and red light district), you’d think they’d get fuel there at all costs…even though you bear them of course! It’s the bits in between the towns that would be the issue though, there’s not much between Albany and Esperance other than hamlets.

When the current crisis affects even @Radiohead ā€˜s retirement travels, you know you’re in the poo.

Yes, I was thinking to make sure I have a full tank when heading out of each of the South West, Albany, Esperance and Kalgoorlie so that I have enough to make it to the next largest town.

Even if means having to pay $2.80 / litre or whatever, thus my fuel bill might be $200 more than usual, but still a fairly small portion of the overall cost of the trip (eg flights and car hire alone are about $2,500). I would try to get a 91 RON car so that if 91 RON isn’t available (for whatever reason) so I can fill up with 95/98 if I have to, you can’t do it the other way around with a car that needs 95+.

I’m leaning towards still going ahead with it all (at this point).

TIL that ā€˜RON’ is the official acronym for octane. I always just say ā€˜Unleaded 91 (octane)’.

Getting off topic here so enjoy the trip and I agree, you may as well do it as planned given the expenses just to get over there and around Quokkaland.

Have a Masters Spearmint or two and support the WA owned petrol stations too (Vibe, Burk) as they are often the cheaper ones. And hopefully you can snare some Bight tropo as the warm season isn’t over yet, despite the unseasonable cold over east.
