AM and FM DX

Makes sense as Coffs Harbour can be received in Brissy.

So no chance of 2ZZZ?

Thereā€™s an elevated spot about 6-7 km west of Dorrigo on the Waterfall Way where Brisbane FM can be picked up as clear as a bell; I even got 4RIM Boonah blasting in last time (not sure if thatā€™s permanent reception). Thereā€™s a very convenient parking bay and a rubbish bin on the eastbound side where you can DX and admire the view.

I mention this because itā€™s a fairer approximation of the Mt Moombil- Brisbane path.

Some places in Brisbane Iā€™ve noticed with goods Coffs reception in car is the south facing side of Red Hill (overlooking Lang Park) with bonus great views to the south. No doubt other similar spots.

2ZZZ is there, but is quite weak where I am, and was able to be nulled out.

Thanks for the Red Hill tip re south facing DX, any recommendations for a good spot for signals from the north or west in Brissy?

I went up to Mt Tamborine this morning

Some great views from up there!
But thatā€™s not the reason for my post!

My chosen DX spot was the western end of Beacon Rd, North Tamborine.
It has very good protection from Gold Coast signals, and a great take off to the south, west and north.
And it is very quiet with no one else much around.

Here are my highlights (RDS name as received in bold).

To receive Gympie/Cooloola Coast stations 94.5, 95.3 and 96.1 you need to be in the Bayside suburbs - north or south, probably east of Cannon Hill or the Gateway. They will be received in preference to Mt Nardi that will be heard elsewhere.

Stations from Wide Bay and Sth Burnett, you just need height; but Bandaberg is hard with car or telescopic whip - even going over the Gateway bridge (20 stories high) there is little signal.

At Red Hill you will also get the stations from the west, NW and SW but the top of Camp Hill (or better still nearby Whites Hill Reserve) is better even though not that high. Mt Gravatt is an obvious choice as well.

The ā€˜whole hogā€™ option for the northern stuff would be Mount Mee: Rockhampton 103.1 is permanent there on a car radio.

In perhaps the most appropriate setting for DXing- ā€˜The Dishā€™ near Parkes- I managed to receive surprising aircraft scatter from 104.9 Muswellbrook. Wuss FM Sydney was there too. The dish rotated during my visit and seemed to scatter signal from 89.5 Peak Hill (short, deep fades were observed).

When I was out near Forbes about 2 years ago it didnā€™t take long for Sydney and Illawarra to fade up either. 98.9 JJJ was quiet prominent. Could also get Shep and Griffith fading in on the same respective frequencies.

Griffith and Illawarra (95.7) were there also. 94.5 had Gold FM West Wyalong on it at times but nothing of JJJ Shepparton; I didnā€™t check the other Sheep Herder frequencies.

What radios are you picking these up on? It amazes me sometimes what I can pick up in the car sometimes.

Also a couple of weeks ago while at the footy was station surfing on the one in my phone and was picking up an ABC Local Radio on 105.7

Was that at a Newcastle Knights game?

If so, that would have been the one from Muswellbrook, a permanently received station in the region (though in some parts of Lake Macquarie, it will be JJJ Sydney).

Yes it was[quote=ā€œRadiohead, post:1779, topic:229, full:trueā€]

I managed to achieve a DXing first today: receiving 95.1 Gem FM from a considerable distance. Gem FM faded up quite well via aircraft scatter from Bald Hill Lookout, Hill End. I initially thought it was 2MIA Griffith but a quick check of // 92.7 Zoo and 95.5 Parkes revealed the same piece of pap from Taylor Swift. The frequency then shook off the burden of the Inverell interloper and was static once more, though, in the not too distant future, the networked sounds of MMM Bathurst will be heard.

At the nearby Beaufoy Merlin Lookout, 89.7 Brown Mountain was able to poke through TAB Lithgow and Hit 104.7 Canberra was romping in. The Great Dividing Range duct, which often yields Sofala in Numeralla, was probably at work in a muted form.

101.1 from Bourke was well received at Tooraweenah this morning; this town is on the western side of the Warrumbungles. 2CUZ also made a brief appearance with a Bruno Mars song. Aircraft scatter from 101.7 and 106.5 Warwick was also noted from here.

I have discovered the most southerly Rebel FM outlet in the country: 107.5 MHz from the Moolarben Coal Mine via Ulan. Itā€™s a very silly frequency to choose since 107.5 FM Orange can be heard quite well in Gulgong, and starts to boss the frequency around half way between Gulgong and Ulan. It sounds like they are relaying directly from the webstream. 103.9 MHz from Ulan is still on air and relaying ABC Local Radio.

I also noted fleeting reception- near Cassilis- from Power FMā€™s Merriwa translator on 102.7, though, as usual for this frequency, Orange was generally winning out. I may have better luck at Sandy Hollow tomorrow.

Noted a mystery ABC Local Radio outlet on 95.7 MHz today. This was received just east of Bylong. A search of the ACMA database turns up only Wollongong and Corryong (Mt Elliot) within 400 km of Bylong, so itā€™s probably an unofficial self help tx nearby. I didnā€™t check 95.7 at Bylong itself but itā€™s probably there or thereabouts. Nothing but Wollongong on the channel in Gulgong, though.

I can also report that 91.7 JJJ, 93.3 2NM, and 94.9 Power (Muswellbrook) are back on air from the Ravensworth Mine. 99.1 2NM and 100.9 JJJ are also there from Mount Owen.

Finally, hereā€™s a bandscan from Flirtation Hill, Gulgong this morning (tropo present):

Some mid winter inland ducting occurring into NW Sydney tonight.
Eagle Fm fluctuating in strength, but currently being received with RDS.

Orange nationals enhanced, and commercials fading up under the splatter of Triple M and Triple J.
No Brock as 2NSB is far too strong, but Sky Sports Radio from Mt Ovens is well received on 100.9

107.9 Move Fm is once again receivable since the Sydney TCBL have temporarily ceased broadcasting.
KO Fm over 2ST which is normal here in non tropo conditions.

105.1 MHz was fading between Orange and another station for me. Perhaps 2ABCRN from Batemans Bay?

Why are these low powered sites allocated such freqs with known co channel problems?

ACMA are not following their historical best practice, instead interference limiting.

What does the Radcom db show for it?
