Looks like it’s been a busy DX day today:
Tonight (or potentially a few minutes to an hour into the next day) is the night AO Radio on 99.7 FM will go off-air for another year following the Men’s singles final, opening up the frequency in Melbourne once again for some FM DXing.
Somehow that reminds me, the 91.6 Chinese narrowcast in Sydney commenced its annual (4 week?) broadcast on Thursday.
Heard Hit93.1 Wagga this evening, mostly weak, faded up to stereo a couple of times. Verified by hearing Eskimo Joe on that and Hit101.3 at the same time.
Another night of inland lift without the coastal tropo swamping it.
(Note: I have gone back to the folded dipole, rabbit ears cable has come loose, replacement one doesn’t seem to connect as well. Dipole is a bit more cumbersome to wave around, but I think it works better now). Pic below
It’s really neat seeing the map whenever an E skip event is recorded, especially paths that cut across water like today.

Hit 93.1 was coming in here in Sydney as well, but not enough for RDS.
It feels like Middle Brother has been receivable almost every day here in Sydney on my northeast antenna since I put it up. At this point, I’m not even sure if it’s just a very long period of tropo or if it’s (semi) permanent – it does fade in and out sometimes like the services from Orange also do.
Couple of DX notes from a trip to Lakes Entrance earlier in the week:
-Monday-Tuesday: Mt Barrow ABCs from Launceston were coming in, signal strength was moderate and reasonably stable. Warragul 93.5 Vision Australia Radio and 94.3 Triple M noted as well at low signal strength.
-Wednesday night- Commercials and ABCs from Cooma were coming in, low to moderate signal strength depending on the frequency, reasonably stable again.
I think I almost had RDS, around 10pm it faded up to around 14dbuv and the RDS light lit up, but wouldn’t decode. I noted if i moved the dipole, I could get Real FM instead, so I suspect that might have stopped RDS from appearing
Probably semi permanent, I get the same thing with Batemans Bay ABCs, they have been receivable every day during summer, but will fade in and out on the weaker days.
And as the signals the last few days aren’t really strong enough for me to call it “tropo”, the Hepburn maps haven’t really been showing anything much more than “marginal” (purple) coastal enhancement.
Anything from 7SD or Hobart?
I deliberately avoided Lakes Entrance on my recent trip down there; too many blardy tourists. The lookout on the western side of town (atop the hill) is good for Tassie reception. BITD a prominent TV DXer had clear reception of TVT6 Hobart from there.
Middle Brother in Brisbane today plus generally from NNSW - Coffs commercials, Mt Dowe.
Didn’t get anything from Hobart or any of the 7SD frequencies unfortunately (this was from the second story of the townhouse I was staying in so may have been a different story if I’d been able to get the opportunity to do some DXing at the lookout).
It’s the same for me also on the south antenna with both Canberra and Batemans Bay. I wasn’t even sure anymore whether Canberra/Batemans Bay was tropo or semi-permanent because they seem like they’re almost always there to some level, fading in and out. I guess I’ll have to wait till winter to see what the actual normal reception is.
Middle Brother, Coffs, Pt Macquarie, Inverell, Mt Dowe GGG from south plus CQ from north tonight.
Amazing to read of Mt Moombil and Kalgoorlie signals received in Renmark.
Perhaps @Shaun1997, you could describe what you heard to the ABC and SCA for a QSL card or a 2025 digital equivalent?
Some tropo to Albury this morning in Melbourne.
ABCs at about 10-15 dBuV
Hit/MMM fluctuating between 1-8dBuV
Big signals from CQ, including Miriam Vale 50w, Banana, Keppel FM, Gladstone,
Blocking high in the Tasman forecast from this weekend into next week- keep an ear on the NZ frequencies if you’re on the coast.
