AM and FM DX

I guess I won’t really be able to tell what my new antennas would receive on a regular basis this evening. 96.3 Coast FM completely wiped out by Triple J Manning River at the moment like it’s a local station:

New FM with RDS:

Port Macquarie, Port Stephens, Grafton, etc. also coming in, including Hit 102.3 Port Macquarie.

Well done on the setup, a lot of us here are probably jealous with envy

Out of curiousity, how tall is the mast in height? It has to be at least 5m judging by how well it clears the roof line.

It was quoted as 15 feet, so 4.6m (not sure why masts are in feet as opposed to metres).

2ST 91.7 now coming in with RDS on TVCL South:

After a week of E-Skip, good to see some Northerly Tropo tonight
Newcastle Good to Strong into Bowral tonight
2HD Belmont on 90.5, 2HD Port Stephens on 97.5
Middle Brother with a good signal
GLFM mixing with Triple J Canberra.

One of those nights where I would normally be out at the headland with the TEF 6686, but I’m home being a Dad to my 6 day old son. Priorities!

Getting Triple M Coffs down to 2EC Bstemans Bay, signals from the Highlands/Blue Mountains also strong.

Have 2VOX sneaking in under the local Hit. Oddly haven’t been able to replicate that with 93.3, 94.1, 94.9 or 102.9. Not getting full RDS of course

Coffs commercials also received in Brisbane tonight.

Just went out to sample the sunset DX from Hotham:

7SD with RDS
7XS 107.1 weak
93.9/94.7/96.3 Geelong good (no RDS)
88.1 3MFM
Suspect 98.7 3RPP
All Melbourne FMs at good strength; Nova and Smooth now with RDS as well as the nationals
88.5 King Island good strength
Launceston nationals S9+

Obviously tapping into the coastal tropo somewhat. Nothing from 7AD or 7BU; 100.9 is occupied by Albury and Bega/Cooma.

There are three distinct DX spots at Mount Hotham, one favouring Tassie, the other Melbourne/Ballarat/Bendigo and another favouring the north.

  • Newcastle/Port Stephens
  • Manning River (over the top of Gosford)
  • Wagga Wagga
  • Goulburn, including low-power Goulburn Town services
  • SW Slopes/Riverina (over the top of Katoomba on 89.1)
  • Nowra (including Sky Racing on 103.7 and 2ST on 91.7)
  • Batemans Bay

Noice!

I did get a weak 89.5 Grafton, but the only lower power Goulburn i had was 94.3 SKY

Wagga was blocked by suburban Sydney/Coffs/Mudgee 93.1.

Also had fair Orange ABCs on 102.7 and 104.3, plus 106.3 PNN CW Slopes

Nothing from Mt Dowe or Tamworth though.

Have you also had any luck at Newcastle UHF tonight? With tropo around, there might be a chance at the moment.

Wollongong is also enhanced, so no, it doesn’t work due to the co-channeling.

hit102.3 and Triple M 100.7 Port Macquarie into Sydney (via the TVCL North webserver on Antenna A).

Station ID for hit102.3 at 1 min 20 secs into the following DX recording I did. Also heard during this recording is a signal battle between hit102.3 Port Macquarie and ABC Classic FM Canberra.

Tropo received tonight on the new TEF setup:

Canberra with RDS:

Also got ABC RN Goulburn on 97.9, but that’s missing from the database so I couldn’t add it.

Nothing interesting on the one pointing east. Reconsidering whether it’s worth it having an antenna pointed towards New Zealand given how rarely it comes in. Perhaps split out Wollongong vs Canberra and/or Orange vs Adelaide.

Canberra at RDS levels now:

2NUR with RDS:

Anyone able to ID this station on 93.9? I caught an ID, but the ID doesn’t actually mention the station name.

93.9 Roccy FM Young? Sounds like the Super Radio FM feed.

Definitely Roccy, no other Caralis FM network on 93.9.

Manning River ABCs very clear into Brisbane this morning, Mt Moombil booming in. Faint sign of 102.3 Port Mac, 100.7 not quite heard due to Toowoomba.

Also hearing 101.3 Mayhem Radio Murwillumbah here for the first time. This one is a surprisingly difficult catch despite not being that far away. Perhaps it runs on vertical? Or just not a great site for coverage to the north - it’s fairly weak across much of the Gold Coast too.

EDIT: seems 2GF is pushing over the top of JJJ Nambour here as well.

Hobart FM strong into Mt Hotham this morning. Classic with RDS but none from JJJ. Also had the commercials, Vision 104.3 and SBS

Really good Tropo this morning.
Canberra stronger than usual with RDS
Newcastle commercials with RDS
Good Middle Brother
Brown Mountain at fair levels
Weak ABC South West Slopes
Only 100.7 Port Macquarie, 102.3 blocked by Canberra
