But then I don’t really recall ever getting 2RE via night skip much anywhere… you could barely even hear it via ground wave here in Newcastle back in the day.
According to the ACMA database it looks like 1557 KIX (500w) shares the same site as 5RM’s AM transmitter (2kW), so that explains why the coverage gets out a long way.
1305 RN’s site is actually just a few km away down the road, as driving through that part of the world both masts are visible from the major highway in the area (Sturt Highway / A20).
The groundwave from both must be exceptional as KIX is receivable in Mildura even in the middle of the day, though on the noisier side.
The TVCL Radio 3 antenna is located much lower than TVCL Radio 1/2, so not so good for DXing. It’s meant more so for congestion alleviation, but it does have some differences to TVCL Radio 1/2:
New stations: Vintage FM 88.7, Kix Country 105.3
Better reception: Pulse FM 94.1, 2ST 102.9
Better reception + RDS: Vox 106.9; Highland FM 107.1
Kind of receivable: River FM on 87.6 (but co-channeled with Voice of Islam)
Antenna setup alongside the AM antenna for the new AirSpy server also:
Those that run nodes will need to pay attention to thunderstorms. There was a very severe storm that hit the Sunshine Coast hinterland the other day, but obviously no damage to the node from that.
Have had Braidwood, RSR and Taree with summer tropo one morning in Katoomba, maybe early 2022. 2RE had only just converted at the time. No RDS from any of them though. 2RE was fairly dominant around the Edge cinema on Gt Western. Braidwood poking through on the south facing Lurline St.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Rox is permanent around Bell/Dargan I’ve had it there in flat conditions also.
Have also had Sky Hpon Nowra nullable through 2LT in Lawson before, that would barely be a few km from the tx.
Yes it would be definitely possible in tropo- you’ve had us loud and clear from Blacktown.
My goal is to get 2BRW from the famous red bin at Oatley Park. There is a solid sandstone cutting there which might block 2RSR enough, especially with a TEF in hand. I’ll be keeping an eye on the tropo forecasts this January as that’s when I can make a (very early) morning trip.
During the bushfire summer of 2019/20, Braidwood was causing CCI to 2RSR on the car radio at the red bin. I daresay the TEF might have resolved it that morning.
