AM and FM DX

There was some good inland tropo into Sydney this morning with Goulburn, Canberra, and CWS quite strong on the car radio.

I was listening to an interview on 2PNN 106.3 CWS which was booming in, featuring a delegate of the NSW Farmers Association who are lobbying the government to abolish Day light savings in NSW.

I experienced the same on my car radio this morning. CWS was coming in over the top of Move FM on 107.9 at times.

Yes, Breeze and Rebel get amazing coverage off Mt Goonanamen.

Hmm, I hadnā€™t heard 96.3 Bundaberg was off air. Last I heard it was called Encore? Anyway, maybe they should reserve the frequency for a 4BU conversion in that case.

I meant to reply earlier. 4GY was scratchy around Hervey Bay, oddly i could get some reception of the 107.1 Noosa relay too, But it wasnā€™t very strong.

It would be good if Rebel and the Breeze could activate some of their frequencies north of Newcastle or North-West of Sydney.

If you search for @AJ1ā€™s contributions, youā€™ll read the why of this situation. Very well explained.

ACMA has again given Rebel a raw deal. ACMA has also behaved similarly to Midwest for the 2LT conversion and the retrograde frequency change for their s39, from 95.3 to 107.9. Many other examples exist of this.

Spent a bit of time on AM today between Rockhampton and Mackay on my way to Airlie Beach since there is not much in between the two towns FM wise. Though I did have FM reception the full 340 kms with a fair amount of overlap coverage wise. Even had weak Rockhampton ABCs in Mackay.

Back to AM, and I had 4QW St George until about mid way Rocky and Mackay. @dxnerd 4KZ started to be received near Marlborough but didnā€™t became listenable enough until about 40 kms north of Mackay.

4MK was clear pretty much all the way and 4QN Townsville also started to be received not far out of Rockhampton.

A few observations of retransmission stations between Rockhampton and Mackay

Carmila
89.7 4SBS - dead air
92.9 4ABCRN - dead air
94.5 ABCRR was on air though

St Lawrence was a bit the opposite. All of the following were on air
94.9 4ABCRR
95.7 4ABCRN
97.3 4SBSFM

Clairview - both of the following also on air
93.3 4MKY (with RDS)
100.1 4ABCRR

Very interesting obs, thanks for those. I have picked up Carmila via Es and I think I noted 92.9 with carrier. Iā€™ve often wondered about FM reception between Rocky and Mackay (in the desolate zone)- were you able to get commercial FMs all the way, or just the ABCs?

Interesting, thanks for the update.

4MK has really impressive range actually. I find to the north you can get 4MK on 1026 easily up as far as Airlie Beach too.

Is 93.3 in Clairview a 4MK service? I had no idea they had an FM translator there.

Could Rebel buy 99.1/88.3 from ARN or are those licenses restricted to just being translators?

Iā€™m pretty sure these are tied to the 2UUS licence; using the frequencies for alternative purposes would require a reallocation process Iā€™d imagine.

This is a great case of MediaSpy dreaming  I donā€™t think Rebel Media are in a position to hoover up licences; theyā€™re having enough trouble getting their Mid North Coast translators to air.

There is no resource issue.

Itā€™s solely an ACMA specification (adequate power/coverage) issue. Modelling and extrapolated field strength readings for 2GLA show the MNC (Great Lakes) specs struggling to reach indoor grade level in the target urban centres in the licence area, which we are entitled to deliver. Additionally the regulator co-channeled 94.1 with 2CCM, which is likely to worsen the deficient signal coverage issue along parts of the coast.

The ACMA suggest the existing planning/spec is ok, which is baffling given their own modelling shows notable signal level deficiencies in every urban center, and they havenā€™t yet considered the 94.1 co-channeling issue.

This is the ACMAā€™s job to fix.

A job they are simply not doing.

93.3 is a Hit100.3 relay.

Interesting thanks. Wonder why they donā€™t also pipe Triple M there as well.

Some more impressive Nth QLD signals today on the trip from Airlie Beach to Townsville (my last stop before I head home on Sunday).

4MK lasted until about Ayr. This was also where the Mackay commercial and ABC FMs became weak. 4KZ was loud and clear from Bowen up.

Townsville FMs commercial and ABCs started to be received about 40 kms south of Bowen. Community stations 4TTT and 4K1G appeared mid way Bowen and Ayr. Live 99.9 was the weakest, only appearing about 50 kms south of Townsville.

The Bowen Hit/MMM relays had coverage from Proserpine to Ayr, and the Ayr Hit/MMM relays from north of Bowen, and I can still get Ayr reception in my Townsville hotel room.

Also had Cairns ABCs being received from about 40km north of Bowen and can get them in my hotel room too.

I also had weak Collinsville Breeze 90.1 and a fair Rebel 94.9 with RDS on the car Radio just north of Bowen. Didnā€™t get to stop to check RDS details, they werenā€™t there for long.

Hi @Radiohead
Have you tried for any TEP (Trans Equatorial Propagation) on the FM band up in Townsville?
Iā€™m no expert on this mode of propagation. Maybe @dxnerd might be able to advise further?
Is Townsville far enough north to support FM TEP DX?
If so maybe try a directional FM antenna on your TEF6686 in the evening between 8pm & 11pm local time in a good dx location. Iā€™m not exactly sure of the correct window of time.
As it is around solar maximum, now would be a good time to try for such dx given your location. Try for Japan FM DX frequencies?

Yes, but only during periods of good TEP, mainly around the equinoxes. Japanese DXers have received Power 100 Townsville.
