AM and FM DX

I just did a quick check…

Middle Brother very strong around 35db, 96.3 JJJ interfering with Coast FM in a big way here.

Port Macquarie 100.7 and 102.3 also received around 13db, but MMM Kempsey 106.7 is stronger at 20db … 105.1 for me is Radio National Batemans Bay, also very strong at around 27db (also got 101.9 and 103.5). News Radio 100.5 also interfering with local 2RPH.

Coffs ABCs also there, but weaker, only about 7db.

Wollongong and Sydney also very strong, Knights Hill ABCs and Artarmon commercials both at around 50db virtually local signal.

Nothing from Eden or Brown Mountain.

Odd that the PTY showing as Pop, unless temp bit error. Their PTY was last seen as ‘Rock’ earlier this year. Awesome catches of both Townsville & Mackay :+1:

And they’ve forgotten Dave Gleeson finished up for the year last week!

Down here Newcastle has overflown us, with the non national fm’s getting up to moderate strength at best.

The sweet spot for tonight’s duct into Sydney covered from Kempsey to Middle Brother. Coffs Harbour was at the northern fringe. My hunch why I received Coffs Harbour Bruxner Park better than Mt Moombil was the duct being super coastal. Mt Moombil was most likely too far west.

Tomorrow night is off the scale, and will again favour Middle Brother north into Sydney. Strength probably equal to tonight or stronger.

It is nice to welcome back some decent tropo now Lanino has gone.

Hope so! I will have more time to do DXing tomorrow night too.

Middle Brother and Sydney still very strong this morning.

Others have now faded out, hopefully will be back tonight.

In Brisbane, Wide Bay signals are lower but Rockhampton ABCs and commercials are still going strong plus Mackay still at stereo levels.

Due to an unscheduled 3am wakeup (thanks son) I was able to check the dials just on 4am our time and signals were still good then. Received the Dalby community station on 89.9 as well as Hit from there at very good levels. Again had Grafton strong enough to overcome Sunshine Coast on 89.5 too.

Almost all reverted back to normal non-tropo levels now here.

Who says you can’t be both a DXer and a good parent?

The ducts are way too coastal for anything here. I’d need to go to Batemans Bay to get anything; even Braidwood is too far west. It was instructive that Brown Mountain made it to Coffs Harbour but not Mount Roberts (XL/Snow).

The coastal nature of these duct was very evident last night. Coffs Harbour Bruxner Park was received better into NW Sydney than the high powered nationals of Mt Moombil.

Middle Brother and Mt Yarrahapinni were smack bang in the centre of the duct into Sydney last night, whereas Mt Moombil was right on the very fringe. Newcastle overflew Sydney for the most of last night.

The ducts tonight are expected to be again very coastal and more intense than last night. I have noticed that things are a lot slower getting started today. By this time yesterday all Middle Brother stations were in to Sydney, at the moment things are very flat. Hopefully things pickup tonight.

Eve within Brisbane the DX experience varied based on distance from the bay.

100% - you being bayside hear far more coastal tropo than I do here to the west of the city (though proximity to Mt Coot-tha and my inferior antenna configuration don’t help me either).

The Thunderstorm through Western Sydney are killing any tropo starting up.

Rockhampton and Mackay are back tonight.

Well tonight has been a dead loss in the Sydney region, I am not sure about Newcastle or further north?

Current situation: There are tropo echoes on the BOM Radar off the coast of Newcastle, and an approaching line of storms going through the Southern Tablelands.
This afternoons storms and the next storm front are killing any potential Tropo in Sydney tonight.

Looking ahead other than some potential Tropo early tomorrow, tomorrow afternoon and evening will be similar today with storms in the afternoon and then a southerly buster later tomorrow night.

Sunday afternoon looks to be the next opportunity with purple on the MNC and potential for NZ Tropo into coastal Sydney too.
@dxnerd may also get some Tropo too as it will penetrate further inland this time.

Agree, there was some good tropo earlier tonight, but not as good as last night.

Only real highlights were getting Artarmon commercials at 55db, local strength, better than last night. And i had Power, 2SEA and 2EC from Eden for about an hour, but that’s gone.

There were weak Port Macquarie commercials earlier too, also gone, but nothing from Kempsey tonight. Middle Brother weaker than last night too.

Wollongong also weaker than last night, but still good at 40db. Sydney starting to drop off now too.

Agree, i think the winds will kill tropo tomorrow, the super hot days don’t usually give good tropo in my experience and as there is not meant to be any seabreeze either.

If it is going to be 40’c on the coast tomorrow that means there will be NW winds which creates flat conditions. Often with these weather setups the coast can be hotter than Western Sydney.

The best for me tonight is some slight enhancement of Wollongong fm and TV from Knights Hill. Everything from the north is flat.

Severe lightning here this evening so no tropo down this way. That line also moved through the South Coast which explains the disappearance of Eden.

Yes blanket NW wind tomorrow and some serious heat and fire danger. Pretty awful and I hope the lightning tonight hasn’t started any fires.
