AM and FM DX

Cross referencing Lava confirms this one

Did this match 90.1 7EXX? Chilli has a common log on both Launceston and Scottsdale stations.

Likely to be 3CH Highlands FM Kyneton

Didn’t get to check, it was pretty weak… but couldn’t think what else it could be playing pop music.

That has to be the first confirmed FM DX reception of 90.5 5SE (Triple M) on MediaSpy!

That’s a great haul.

I’ve never DX’d up there but it looks like it is probably one of the best spots in the state to get Melbourne, Geelong, Bendigo, Ballarat and Warrnambool all in one place so clear. Plus stations from Tasmania and Gippsland thrown in for good measure.

When tropo happens in SW VIC it’s usually pretty intense due to the relatively flat terrain. You’ve only got the ‘peak alones ’ of the Grampians to disturb any ducting. Contrast this with SE NSW and NE VIC where the nearly snowless but high Alps make certain paths very difficult (such as CBR-MEL).

The flat terrain also helps the Bass Strait maritime air filter well inland, which explains why places like Renmark and Mildura can see very intense tropo.

Did a quick DX on the car radio in the car park at Reed Lookout in the Grampians this morning. Didn’t appear to be any enhancement as there was nothing from Tasmania despite a relatively clear take off to the south, west and north, east was a just a bit shielded.

Highlights - all were fair to good with RDS

90.5 Triple M RDS Mt Gambier
96.1 SAFM RDS Mt Gambier
99.5 Hit Mildura - only fair, couldn’t get 97.9 though.
100.5 spoken content - not sure what this was
101.9 and 105.1 ABCs Loxton (91.5 and 93.1 were Melbourne but fairly weak, 93.9 was Geelong).
102.7 ABC Classic Mildura fairly weak (nothing on 100.3 or 104.3, 105.9 I think was Melbourne, not sure if 101.1 was Melbourne or Mildura).
106.5 Flow FM RDS Birchip
106.9 RSN Swan Hill
107.3 Flow FM RDS Kingston SE
107.7 Mixx FM Swan Hill no RDS

Warrnambool, Portland, Bendigo, Ballarat (RDS on 3BA and Power), Mt Gambier ABCs were all present. High power Melbournes were weak

Did a check on AM too - highlights

549 2CR Orange - @dxnerd will be pleased to know this was received, fair but some static.
567 2BH Broken Hill - weak
729 and 891 ABCs Adelaide - fair. These were the only Adelaide stations I could get.
1161 5PA Naracoorte - fair
1476 5MG Mt Gambier - very weak

Most Melbourne AM stations could be received, fair reception, 621 and 774 were pretty clear. But nothing on 1062 or 1305 from Loxton, I think I heard 801 though.

This could possibly be a HPON from Warracknabeal, which its client is United Christian Broadcasters Australia Limited according to ACMA’s RRL.

Ah thank you! That’s probably it.

@TV-Expert does it again! Was just about to say Warracknabeal.

Thanks for the 2CR report as well. I really need to ‘go west, old man’ with the loop and see just how far I can get 2CR in the daytime. I think on one of your other trips you reported weak/ fair in car reception at Broken Hill (which would be strong with the loop). I might have to go as far as Ceduna or even Eucla before it fades

Yes, though 2BH 567 is very strong in Broken Hill town since the TX is right on the north side of town which caused some splatter onto 549, so that might muddy the waters somewhat…. My Mazda has better AM reception than my Ford Focus did when I was in Broken Hill in 2020 so I dare say daytime 2CR reception into South Australia is easily achievable.

Awesome log. All I’ll say is there’s a good chance 99.7 was Hit Griffith/MIA, it comes in surprisingly well into a lot of Victoria.

The two Mt Gambier commercials still on different sites?

@tamago_otoko 99.7 Griffith has a good coverage area, are the ABC services heard as far?

I had them in the car on the Hume until about Euroa, don’t recall hearing them at Black Hill in Ballarat though.

Looking @ the Hepburn map for Saturday evening there looks (at this early stage) to be a potential opening for NSW North Coast/SE Qld to NZ Northland/Auckland tropo fm/vhf dx. We shall see I guess…

Currently passing through Hamilton, it’s cool and overcast so would be flat conditions, was still getting Bendigo ABCs and commercials just east of town, they’ve been ever present since Wangaratta, their coverage area is very impressive!

First report from my trip. Currently at Porters Lookout, Dural. Canberra stations including Artsound and 2XX clear in the middle of the day on the TEF, 105.5 with RDS. Eagle FM like a local with RDS, 97.9 RN clear. Wagga 93.1 via As.

I would say they are now coming from the same Mt Burr site, because there’s a tiny part of the Main Street where the 90.5 & 96.1 reception goes a bit weak for a few seconds & the RDS display in my Dad’s Kia disappears. The ABC’s from Mt Burr are also a bit weak, but not as bad as the 2 commercials. I parked on the side of the road earlier & took these 2 photos, 90.5 with the stereo indicator but no RDS & 96.1 no stereo indicator (it was flickering on & off) & no RDS.

The move to Mt Burr seems a bit odd given it’s further away from Mt Gambier than The Bluff…. It must be cheaper to rent there?

Went up North Brother just now. Unfortunately 100.1 Gloucester is a bit of a nuisance up there, but I can null it with the TEF. No sign of Lord Howe. Tropo isn’t that intense at the moment as I couldn’t get Wollongong up there. Best catch was River 94.9 with ‘Welcome To The Jungle’, confirmed via music log. River was mostly via As.

NE’ly was blowing its head off up there too; hard to DX in the open. I’ll be heading up there for sunrise to see what I can get.

My first choice antenna on the TEF broke(!) but luckily I brought two spare whips.
