I actuality most nights can get 4CC on 1584. Out of intrest how is 2VM’s signal on 1530 been recently ? (We inherited 2RE’s main transmitter and its made a world of difference to our local signal)
4CC does pretty well on 1584, dominant most of the time on its channel even down here.
The worst frequencies are the X-band channels; 1629 is the definition of a dog’s breakfast down here. There are presently no local stations from 1611-1701 kHz in Canberra.
Was surprised to find the other night I just managed to pick up 4LG on the car radio. I think it’s the first time I’ve picked up a Queensland station before.
QLD AM radio into Melbourne at night shouldn’t be too difficult, but good catch all the same …. I kinda have a soft spot for 4LG from hearing their “4HI and 4LG” callsign at night on 1098 back in the 1980s here in Newcastle …. Hearing that on 1143 was never going to be possible however.
I often hear ABC Radio Wide Bay (4QO/4QB) over the top of the local 3CR on 855 kHz at night here in Melbourne, even near the 3CR studios in Smith Street, Fitzroy.
The 3CR transmitter is at Werribee, and is only 3.5 kw, which would help if you are in the inner east.
Was surprised to be hearing Triple J 102. 3 Coonabarabran tonight for several minutes during medium rainfall.
102.9 2ST a bit stronger tonight than previous days.
Still no signal on my hifi with dx setup, receivable on the car radio but similar strength to Highlands fm (2WKT)
My guess is the transmitter is on it’s way out and they are running it at reduced power.
Pity ARN / Grant don’t have a tech on this forum.
An update, spoke to 2ST the receptionist said their techs found no issues with the 102.9 Bowral service.
So looks like this reception into Sydney will be the new norm.
Will certainly make receiving Triple M Newcastle much easier with tropo.
On the flipside, sounds like I won’t be able to get 2ST in my Triple M null anymore during tropo
Speaking of which, I kinda feel that the 102.9 Frequency other than for local programming is kinda redundant similar to the 94.9/96.5 situation in Wollongong/Nowra. What ARN could had done is basically move 91.7 to Knights Hill and give 102.9 to anyone who wants it around the Illawarra.
2ST 91.7 and 102.9 still have separate morning programs? That would be lost in that case.
I agree it would be more efficient use of spectrum if 91.7 was broadcast from Knights Hill to cover the Shoalhaven and Highlands.
This would then free up 106.7 for the launch of Triple J Batemans Bay.
BTW 102.9 2ST is back to normal strength again, receivable with hissy stereo on my dx setup.
102.9 could be reallocated to Brokers Nose for a third community licence for Wollongong with a more general format. Wollongong community radio is quite niche, you have the God Squads Pulse, and VOX which mainly skews old and caters to the local ethnic communities.
I believe 89.3 and 90.1 are reserved for Triple J and one other national service (SBS?) from Mount Wandera. These were put in the LAP years ago and were subject to Band II television clearance (mainly WIN3 Narooma). Nothing has come to pass; it’s always been a strange anomaly, the lack of a native JJJ service in the Eurobodalla. They could have used 102.7 MHz*** before 102.5 Bega came on air in about 1997; Power FM Bega could have used 94.5 and maybe 91.3 for 2EC.
Triple J is strong enough in most parts of the Eurobodalla on either 98.9 (Knights Hill) or 100.1 (Brown Mountain). Moruya is possibly the one spot where JJJ reception can be a bit dicey due to the inland location.
***102.7 was later earmarked for a community radio service in Ulladulla; I think they tested once or twice as ‘Radio Safe Harbour’ before folding. I recall getting a strong signal of continuous music- circa 2007- from Mount Pleasant Lookout. 102.7 MHz Ulladulla is still in the LAP.
I recall a Radio MUM (Milton, Ulladulla, Mollymook) being around at one point…
Interesting. If it’s not a TX power related issue or an antenna radiated power issue, then I wonder if the techs have altered the positioning of the TX antenna in recent times? That might account for the weaker reception?
Has any of our other forum followers to the east, west & south of the transmitter noted weaker/changed reception?
Yes & well the upside of this for Sydney dxers is that it significantly opens the frequency for other stations on 102.9 when DX openings occur.
Thanks @Ant5476 for your efforts & feedback on this matter.
The only thing I can think of, is 102.9 2ST sharing the same antenna as Highlands fm (2WKT) which is vertical rather then mixed. A horizontal fm antenna will receive a weaker signal from a vertical broadcast antenna then a mixed one.
Other then that it is either weather related, very flat tropo conditions, or transmitter related. Multiple people on this forum have noticed it so I guess we will never no what the issue is.
Will check 102.9 around Wamboin when I get the chance; it’s a permanent signal there, also towards Braidwood.
Very weak again today, just above the noise floor at my location in NW Sydney.
