Had what sounded like an ABC station today in Berri on 102.3, the signal wasn’t super strong but there were what sounded like violins playing. Definitely wasn’t MIX102.3 from Adelaide
100% sure knowing your Location it wasn’t ABC Classic from Canberra which is the only ABC Classic station on that Frequency. If so, it would had been very impressive via Tropo. But I am not sure.
The Wagin ABC MF has great coverage - its 50kw (either 2 x 25Kw Nautel’s or a Harris DX50, 20 years since I was last there) into a big anti-fading mast with a top hat. Covers most of WA’s southwest.
Some inland troppo into Brisbane tonight including GEM Inverell and Breeze Tenterfield.
567 AM coming in to Lorne tonight IDing as Radio NZ National, not sure how common this is here
Strong tropo about this morning.
Sydney commercial FMs are hitting 52db on my Tecsun, pretty much local strength.
Wollongong stations are also very strong at 40db.
91.7 2ST is there, but much weaker, only about 3db.
Nothing from further south though.
ABCs from Middle Brother are also stronger than usual.
For the record, the ARN stations (WSFM and KIIS) now look to be back at Artarmon (paging Mr @ozbark ).
Weak SE change along the coast which often results in good coastal tropo . The airmass above is fairly hot.
RNZ National from Wellington. It’s a powerhouse station. 160kw so not surprised you can hear it there.
NZ goes through the gap across the Gulf Of Melbourne and Bass Strait. I think I heard it reasonably well from Apollo Bay.
Observed that here too at 7am.
Merci Monsieur @Radiohead
Well this has certainly been very revealing for both WSFM & KIIS.
If people can excuse my nerdy observances I can reveal the following differences between the RDS & MPX spectrum between the Gore Hill & Artarmon transmissions of the above stations.
Gore Hill: (For both WSFM & KIIS). This site transmits RT+ (Group Code 12A), no CT (ClockTime). The MPX output is more clearly defined with more modulation guarding of the RDS subcarrier. I receive low to Nil BER (Bit Error Rate) for the RDS from this site.
Artarmon: (For both WSFM & KIIS). This site transmits accurate CT (Clocktime), but no RT+. The modulation of both stations often masks the RDS subcarriers & I get much higher RDS BER for both stations.
The RDS subcarrier levels for both stations bounce around & differ greatly comparing no modulation (might add rare to hear periods of silence on commercial FM) to modulation.
In summary; very revealing. Thanks to @RFBurns & @Radiohead for their assistance.
I might also add I suspect there’s also RDS differences for GOLD104.3 Melbourne between the the two different transmission centres on Mt. Dandenong, but I have no idea which observed differences to attribute to each transmitter centre. I made some notes on the RDS list.
Triple M Darling Downs (864am) clear tonight in Renmark. Confirmed as there were ads with Toowoomba in them
Some weak to moderate enhancements from the South Coast this morning with Power fm Nowra received with RDS. 91.7 2ST Nowra received just above the noise floor.
Tropo this morning seems to be limited to about as far south as Nowra as 103.5 2BA is not receivable. No enhancements from the Southern Highlands as Triple M is over 2ST which is the norm here.
Here is the current Hepburn tropo forecast chart.
Looking ahead if the Hepburn forecast chart comes to fruition, early Thursday morning could be good for some inland tropo from Goulburn and Canberra into Sydney.
Nothing between now and then because of SW changes due to hit Sydney.
Has anyone in Sydney noticed any change in regular reception from Move 107.9 Lithgow in the last couple of weeks?
It seems to be better than it used to be here near Newcastle, 99.5 from Katoomba is still a bit clearer however.
Entirely possible. Comparing a fortuitous SDR screen image earlier this year to present I can say of the MPX spectrum that the earlier amplitude difference between say 17kHz & their 19kHz stereo carrier peak was 25dB now it’s an amazing 46dB. This might be due to higher output power or maybe tighter filtering, or both. I’m no expert in such things. Modulated SNR of Move FM varies between around 32 - 40dB. Their MPX spectrum sure looks more like a local station here rather than a semi local. It’s a bigger signal than Triple M Gosford.
I’m sure you’re right as I was only thinking the other day that their MPX spectrum looks so clearly defined now.
No, still can’t get any reception for Move 107.9 or 99.5 on the North Shore.
Mildura radio stations (Hit 99.5 and Triple M 97.9) are super strong this morning in Renmark even though there’s pretty much nothing on the Hepburn charts
There was a SW’ly change spreading across South Australia last night, with a warm airmass ahead of it. Might explain the tropo. Renmark has also been quite cool lately due to its position on the western side of the low (which of course has caused havoc in NSW, tornadoes). The air from Bass Strait helps tropo.
The Illawarra stations can be received there loud & clear around the clock, especially the ABC stations. Wave FM (96.5) & i98FM (98.1) can also be received well.
I also tried turning to 92.5FM (ABC Central Coast), no dice. And I should know, the Central Coast transmitter is really weak.
Anyway, what’s the furthest ABC station you’ve ever received on your radio?
And - I’m not sure if anyone does this - does anyone, while travelling by car, change the frequency of the radio every time to make sure the radio’s always clear?
I might be heading up to the north coast soon and I could try that
