Quite incredible to receive Canberra and Sydney Am in the daytime in Brisbane. Mid Winter residual sky waves at their best!!!
For me 1566 3NE is my longest range Am catch, it is just receivable during the middle of the day in mid winter.

639 2HC Coffs must get out poorly to the north, given the more distant 531 2PM is available via pure groundwave. I have received 2HC quite clearly from Tuross Head during the daytime (Long Jaws was on), so the groundwave coverage is much better to the south.

Another target to try would be 3KND Melbourne on 1503.

Probably explains the Woolgoolga repeater.

And I find the opposite with 531 2PM.

It seems to get out poorly to the south, but much better to the north.

Yes, come to think of it I don’t think I can receive 531 during the day with the loop down on the South Coast. Might take a trip to the coast soon to see what I can receive in the middle of the day.

Apparently Star 104.5 is being heard in parts of Brisbane. Triple M are apparently on reduced power. Not sure if tropo or Es?

Thank you @TV.Cynic - Ive amended my book, for reference these were done at Caxton Street, Paddington/City - on a Denon DN300DH, this is really a fun hobby, can’t believe i never tried this!

I can have another look in more detail later. But I’m sure some other have suggestions.

Going by the Hepburn charts minimal tropo over NSW and SE QLD so would be SpE reception, but I would have thought the distance was to short for SpE reception between Sydney / Central Coast and Brisbane.
Quite unusual for so much SpE at this time of the year, normally late December our peak time.

We in Sydney had the Tasmanian E’s opening on Tuesday afternoon.

Short Hop E-Skip. I guess it got on top of Triple M over there.
Speaking of which. I wonder if Brisbane Triple J listeners heard a particular Gosford station known as Triple M interfering with their hipster music?

Might not be Bundy - Triple M is on 93.1 up there (SCA doesn’t have a Hit network station anymore, just Grants Hitz939 & 4BU)

Could it be Hit 93.1 Wagga Wagga?

That’s what I was thinking

I did notice during my time on the gold coast, that at least South of The Southern Edge of Nth Stradbroke Island, DXing in the Gold Coast region is quite good, I was able to get FM as far south as coffs and as far north as Bundaberg. AM I was able to get 4CA 846 from Cairns and while up in Cairns I was able to reverse that and get 4KQ from Brisbane. Didn’t do much during the Day… You’ll have no problems with DAB as far south as Tweed Heads. Although it can be a little patchy cruising on the Pacific Motorway between Helensvale and Tweed. I hope this helps you and good luck with your future DXing

4CA Cairns is a hard one to get; it may be directional to minimise interference to Canberra? I never heard a peep out of it in Sydney. 846 Canberra may require protection as a ‘flagship’ ABC station, even though it is more likely to interfere with 4CA than the other way around.

Similarly, the Cairns commercial FMs have a very sharp null to the south.

When I was up there in 2001, there was no reception on 99.5, 102.7 or 103.5 at all at Innisfail… they could only be heard from 50 kms south up.

I’m guessing it’s to minimise overspill into Innisfail on both AM and FM.

Mountain terrain south of Cairns could be part of the reason too. And the antenna height of the Cairns commercial FM stations at Mt Yarrabah is only 10 metres above the ground. Using Triple M Cairns, here is the antenna pattern.
|0°T - 170°T|1 kW|
|170°T - 230°T|4 kW|
|230°T - 260°T|5 kW|
|260°T - 320°T|10 kW|
|320°T - 360°T|1 kW|

The Cairns commercials are also tough to get via Es. Generally the Bellenden Ker ABCs have to be blasting in. It’s easier to hear stuff like 96.7 Black Star from Atherton.

They would be a little easier to hear in Victoria, away from the Melbourne stations. Remember Cairns is just about as far west as Melbourne is.
