AM and FM DX

You forget that 4LM is also on the Devil’s frequency. Needless to say I’ve never heard a whiff of it in SE Australia; it was probably there in Cairns but we were focusing on other things like Japan.

I should have got out of bed earlier this morning…
There was some good tropospheric DX to the Orange, Bathurst (eg 2PNN 98.3) & Goulburn areas this morning. Brought in RDS from 93.5 Eagle FM & 103.5 Orange.

Same with me…though with temperatures dipping to -3.5 and being a Saturday, it was difficult

I say that to myself almost every morning…

seeing hi res images taken of Mars - man I wish I could try FMDX from both the Moon & Mars. I wonder if signals could make it to Mars & how strong would they be. Pity I don’t have any friends at NASA… Would be great to have an FM receiver within the payload of a Mars rover with a self erecting antenna

Kinda makes you wonder how far out the FM signals would reach. Possibly to Jupiter / Saturn but that would be a stretch

Moon bound is definitely a thing in DX.

How far can radio travel? - Depends on the receiver! Parkes radio telescope could probably receive transmission from a few light years away. The new SKA in WA could receive from a lot further.

The ionosphere seems to stop our signals getting out much at all.

our broadcast transmissions would not likely reach the stars as the signal would be too weak & long lost to noise. Even if you could receive say an FM broadcast, the signal would be too weak to have any intelligibility. The ionosphere would certainly stop LW/MW/SW but not VHF/UHF

And given how VAST space is, the signal would be years old by the time it gets anywhere.

EON FM might just be reaching Jupiter by now

If there’s intelligent life out there, I’m not sure if the aliens would be that impressed by the TV and radio signals from Earth! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Lol!

Yes, wait until they see our “reality” TV, then they’ll want to stop looking for us for sure!

Also don’t forget that TV and FM signals are beamed out in the horizontal plane. Not up into the sky.

but you would receive signals as the TX site rotates into view or just about to rotate out of view. So reception would be brief to only a few minutes twice a day

Thanks to you, we enjoyed all the detail at the time. Great contributor @RFBurns.

Same with Mt Lofty across regional SA, well in excess of the licence area.

speaking of Mount Lofty, 7FLIX was showing up with ‘no service’ this morning in Renmark but too weak to show up on the signal bar. MIX102.3 was clear on my car radio in a few spots in town this morning

Getting an ABC Classic station on 93.9 this morning in Renmark, a lot of talk about Melbourne so I’m guessing it’s from Melbourne

The only Classic FM station I know of on 93.9 is Hobart. If you’re pulling that in from Renmark that’s something very much out of the ordinary.

Any sign of JJJ on 92.9?

Isn’t the local News Radio there on 93.9?

I think you’ll find that’s coming all the way from Loxton
